A broken Sony receiver

my receiver is SonyHTC-800DP

when i turn it on it first says"Protect" then"Standby" After few minutes this system turns off automatically.

i don't know why. Is there anyway to fix this or how much will it cost to do that?

Make sure you don't have a bad/shorted speaker or shorted speaker cables. Disconnect all speakers and speaker cables and make sure there are no small strands of wire shorting the terminals. Turn on the Receiver and see if you still have the problem.

Sometimes a dog or cat will chew the speaker cables and make a short. When they chew into the AC power cord they usually make some sort of noise.

Your Receiver may have some type of power management processor that detects an overload at the outputs or in the power supply circuits. If you have a DVM, set it for DC volts and connect it to one speaker output, and then turn power on. Record the reading. Repeat for the other channel.

I would estimate that you have to meter the DC output voltage
inside the amp, in front of the output relay.
If one output stage is defect and one amp gives DC output, then
the protection circuit will probably keep the speakers relay off (in order to protect the speakers) and you will find no signal at the terminals.

Besides the DC-output (should be closed to zero), you should also
check the DC rails.

thank you for all your replies. but i don't really know what those things are.

I want to know in this system SonyHTC-800DP how much are those speakers worth? I found out the retail price of HTC-800DP is $ 349.95 USD. how much is the DVD/Receiver worth?
IF the speakers are good enough i can consider to buy a new av receiver.

I doubt the speakers are worth much, maybe 50-100.

It looks like the receiver/dvd player is the most expensive part.

Probably 100-200?



Honestly none of its really worth keeping. Use the receiver as parts or as a dvd player or something.

Or return it if its still under warranty.

one more thing is i can't believe this receiver doesn't have a optical input, so it's no reason to keep this unit because i want to plug it to my xbox.

Any good suggestion for a cheap 5.1 system with optical input? I'm not a audio expert all i want it's some 5.1 effect.
