I'm having a few issues with getting 96/24 out of my computer.
I just came across Foobar and WASAPI which is amazing, lowered the noise floor considerably.
My problem is playing 96/24 rips.
I'm having some difficulty finding drivers for my soundcard which will be addressed as time allows.
My question however: Can one output a 96/24 signal via digital coax out of a computer soundcard (soundcard and appropriate drivers allowing) or am i simply barking up the wrong tree?

Yep. But not with a regular run-of-the-mill variety sound card.

Oh, and one thing about Windows Vista/7, is you need to go into Control Panel -> Playback devices -> Properties -> Advanced to set the default format to 24/96 or whatever you need.

My soundcard is an old c-media of an unknown chipset. With current drivers my only options are 44khz and 48khz out.
Im going to try and install all the c-media drivers one by one to see if i can find the right one (there is only about 10 of them). otherwise plan b is a new soundcard.
I've been looking at the M-audio and the Asus ones. Trying to sort through the marketing and get something high quailty but without the frills and unnecessary crap is always fun however.
Any recomendations?

Old cheap C-Media... immediately comes into mind is CMI8738. Comes in 4-channel and 6-channel variants. God they were horrible, I think the faulty motherboard sound it was meant to replace sounded better.
Just get another sound card. Or rather, if your computer is that old to not have 24/96 from the motherboard sound (available since Intel HD Audio standard became widespread, which was, quite a few years ago. At the start of the dual-core era I think?), you can probably get a second-hand computer with Realtek ALC88(last digit) for the price of a good sound card.
EDIT: Or new motherboard + CPU + ram if you're willing to spend a little more.
