Hi,
I got one of those early "portables" - a Compaq Portable II, circa 1982, fully working. I want to update it (it has a 286 processor, 640k mem and runs DOS..). What I am looking for is a 9inch video monitor VGA or better to replace the green monochrome tube. Anyone knows if these things exist, where to get?
Thanks,
Jan Didden

if youre not going to be lugging it around find an isa video card and run an external monitor
you could also try contacting Compaq in Houston and see if they happen to have any old parts in inventory. cant hurt to ask

rlehman,
Yes, an external monitor would be an option, but I really like to use it as is - it's like a piece of industrial archeology.
I will check with compaq, but these things were never built with color monitors, we're talking 1980's!
Thanks for the pointers, anyway.

that is correct, they did not come with color. they were a standard 640*480 green display. I know, i worked on them. I have been a pc tech since the early 80's.
You will also probably want to start doing research on finding a replacement power supply as they had problems with the flyback's

What I want to do is disassemble the 9 inch monitor and completely replace the green monochrome one, and also the motherboard etc, so it really will be a complete new PC (a wolf in sheepskin?).
BTW, I found a source of 9 inch SVGA monitors in a swivel/tilt case for US $ 169 which I think isn't too bad. I'm waiting for the quote on the shipping to Belgium.
