Is it possible to convert a variable 8ohm L-Pad attenuator for use with a 16 ohm speaker? I know that for a 4 ohm speaker you have to add a 4 ohm resistor in parallel with the input but I dont know the wattage rating for the resistor.

You cannot convert the 8 ohm attenuator.
If you want variable control of level, you will have to obtain a 16 ohm attenuator like the one available from the supplier below.
