Godzilla,
Bill, the Qts difference between the 166 and 167 is not very large, that is probably why you don't see a big difference in the simulations. Either that or you are crossing over high enough that the driver resonance doesn't really matter.

Probably door #2 - MJK's design for the FE167 crosses at 350, as does my version with the 166. That's well above the range in which Qt would matter. Pushing the Fostex lower would just be fighting the dipole rolloff and the natural response of the driver, and would make it run out of excursion too easily.
I suspect that, as Jeff has found, that would be the case for almost any OB FR + woofer setup save one actively crossed at very low. Betsy + Boomer might be one of those exceptions, but I'd bet that they'd gain some headroom if crossed above 100 Hz, at which point BetsyK might work about as well. Have you tried a B-K + Boomer setup?

I haven't. I'm thinking about it though. I thought I was going to build a MooseBVR, but OB's are so popular right now that I'm tempted to jump on the bandwagon. I do need to converse with my wife a bit. She is much more tolerant of big speakers in the corners that weird looking speakers out in the room. Honestly, so am I. I shouldn't blame it all on her!
I may start a thread down in my forum. I've been watching Nelson's Pass's experiments a bit, and I'm considering a lower Qts woofer, a U baffle (on the bottom) and some EQ. I haven't heard it, but 350hz is darn close to middle C for my taste. I understand the need for limiting excursion, but I'll keep the high pass as low and simple as possible to achieve the dynamic range I need. I'd much rather crossover a fullranger driver in a band where it is starting to have issues (5-7K for example) than in a range where it works pretty well!
Right now I'm just trying to figure out how to get Passive Crossover Designer to run on my PC, as it should be all kinds of fun for this project. I think I'm going to have to suck it up and buy Excel, as Open Office might be my problem. For any of you other Mac user/audio diyer's reading this, go buy a decrepit old PC. It's tough to imagine how much good freeware you are missing. I do not fondly recall my days of sitting in my wife's office after hours so I could spend a little time with PSUDII.
