Hi! A few months ago I ordered a 12" shiva and amp to build my first subwoofer project, designed around a 70l sealed box. The amp and driver never shipped and 3 months later I have been refunded my money.
In the spare time I had built the box, and am hoping to use it with another driver/amp. I have around $500 CDN to spend, give or take $100 or so. Originally I was looking at the Dayton 12" RS HIFI driver + plate amp from partsexpress, but am very wary ordering across the border, getting hit with duty and outragous brokerage fees.
I am currently eyeing a Peerless XLS or XXLS Sealed version. After modeling both in WinISD for a 70l box the XLS has a Qtc of about 0.3 (because it is designed for use with a passive radiator?), and the XXLS of 0.8, both seem a little too far off of what I'd like (around 0.6 with low group delay), as I will be using this about 90% for music. I am also concerned about driver excursion in either scenerio as I do often turn my music up fairly, although not excessivly, loud. Louder then many might in either case.
Does anybody have any suggestions or recommendations for a driver and amp? I'm open to anything within my budget. Please keep in mind if I order from an american company I could be charged an extra $100+ for importing the pair. I plan to purchase a Behringer to eq sometime in the future.
Thanks in advance!

Man, I feel your pain. It's frustrating when you order something from down south only to have the overall "value" of it double on account of the excess duties, brokerage fees, etc.
I was seriously considering doing a bulk order with TC Sounds just to get a decent deal going for others here up north...
Anyway, I was told by a friend that you can have products sent to Mailboxes Etc., who would then act as a broker on your behalf. Rather than paying the obsurd amounts that UPS and Fedex charge you, their cost is ~$5. All you have to do is let them know ahead of time that you have a parcel coming to them and they will take care of it.
Getting back on topic, I'd probably get a plate amp from Solen rather than ordering from PE. But that's just me...

I believe the Dayton 12" DVC is very similar to the Shiva (basically the same driver), so it may well be the best bet for retaining your plan. The 12" Titanic Mk. II would almost exaclty hit your goal of a .6 Q in that box with higher sensitivity and greater output capabilities. Neither solve your importation problem though.
If you can add a passive radiator, your enclosure volume would be spot on for the GR research sub and passive: http://www.gr-research.com/drivers/sub_pr.htm. I haven't heard many reports on the driver, but the combo looks fantastic for the money. GR is new in the sub business, but they have been known for quality and value in their woofers. I mentioned this driver because I know RAW Acoustics offers a finished product with the combo. I don't know if they will sell the driver on it's own, but it is worth looking into if you need to stay in Canada. http://www.rawacoustics.com/
good luck,
Paul

I forgot to mention that there are a couple of used Adire DPL12's on ebay. They don't have tons of excursion, but they look great for 70L. The guy may be willing to ship to Canada if you ask. Used drivers may not be your thing, but at least the price is right.

You can avoid the brokerage fees by having any item shipped to Canada by USPS, if the seller is willing. The only charges will be the GST by Canada Customs.
Thank you guys for your suggestions! I am very heavily leaning towards getting a rythmik servo kit at the moment, as they are on sale while out of stock. I will have to shrink the internal volume a bit to meet their recommended enclosure but that's not too big an issue. I have emailed them to ask how soon they will be restocked. I figure with the sale price, even if I get slapped with some taxes or brokerage fees I'll still be pretty well off.
Ive ordered from PE before, its not that bad
i live in toronto, shipping is always 28$ (usps air mail) and usually they charge you like 15-25$ when you pick it up, for me it was cheaper than solen.
the av12 is definately a good choice, all the wonderful compactness of a shiva with all the displacement and low bass of a tempest.
