6V6 GT, Do they worth playing with them ??

Hi ,

a friend have some (11) 6V6 GT (NOS Marconi, RCA, Westing House). I know that they can be used to make a 15 Watts Push-Pull, but wonder if the result would be very good or just "good".

I don't want to spend my time and money on something that won't give me satisfaction I'm curently using a Joliday hybrid (100W) and like it. If I build a full tube amp, I want it to be better then the Jolida. If the 6V6 can't do the job, then I'll wait and look for design using different kind of tubes.

Please let me know what you think !

P.S. if this tubes can be a good choice, I'll need a good design. Any suggestion will be welcome.

Yeah, they can be nice tubes. You could go for (nearly) class A fixed bias, get about 10-12W out of a pair. Very clean sounding tubes IMHO.

Heck, you could even use all 10 of them in parallel (well, PPP) and get some 90W output, enough to compete with your current amp.. you'll need a custom wound transformer to do it though.

Here's a simple but good circuit, I built it myself (albeit using 6BM8/ECL82)

If you don't have a Dynaco A410 handy (that was 8,000 ohm CT),
there's plenty of good alternatives available.

With some fiddling you could run PP parallel 6V6's with a Dyna A470
or similar (A470 is 4,300 ohm CT), if you wanted, but IMHO I'd
probably like it better if I got more effiicient speakers and
stayed content with the 12 watts this puts out..

I also have Audio Notes's Kit 4 on my list.

My speakears are not very efficient (85 dB) so the 12 watts will probably be and issue.

A friend e-mailed me yesterday and told me to wait. I remember that he mentionned (many months ago) that some SE amp can deliver about as much (or more) then the 12 watt the 6v6 design will deliver.

So, I'll probably buy 8 of the 6v6 and put them on the side, just in case the SE amp never become a reality.
