As I understand it the 6CG7 is exactly the same as the 6SN7 except it's a miniature 9 pin tube? Has anyone here ever compared the sound of these two tubes?
I tried it with an ECC33.
I just made an adapter and tried it in a single triode phase splitter and voltage amplifier.
It made no difference to the sound or evenness of clipping when driven over full power.
Being over the other side of the ocean the trial tube was a 6/30L2 however an ECC83 could be tried.
The vintage amplifier can be restored to original in seconds with an adapter.

Electrical equivalents to 6SN7...
Tube Tester Files - 6N8S - 6H8C
7N7, Tube 7N7; Rohre 7N7 ID3955, Double Triode
6N16B and 6021 are 6SN7 with lower Pd in subminiature (pencil tube).

If your tubes have a "sound" you are using them wrong. The book Valve Amplifiers has an extensive evaluation of 6SN7 equivalents by type and manufacturer.
Use two 2C22 to replace one 6SN7. Best sounding 6SN7 replacement there is, in my experience. SiC Schottky diode bias in the cathode makes it even better.
Ok guys thanks for the replies, I am using a quad of 6J5GT's now with an adapter in place of the 6SN7 tubes, this is in Rogue Magnum 99 pre amp. A friend told me look into the 9 pin miniature tubes as a replacement.

Have you ever compared them to the 6J5GT's?
As far as I know the only true equivalent to 6SN7 in 9 pin is 6CG7/6FQ7, but a 6N1P might be close enough depending on the circuit.
Guys I know what most of the equivalent tubes are, I am interested in the sound of the 6CG7 compared to the 6SN7 tube? Or had anyone compared the 2C22 and the 6J5GT sound wise???
As yet suggested in #3, get or make an adaptor, do some DBT's and judge by yourself.
Best regards!

I did used 6CG7 and 6FQ7 to work as phase inverter long time ago, their performance can’t beat E80CC.
And when tube specs are significantly different, they need different values around them in order to have optimum performance of each tube type.
Resistors, current, voltage.

This is one reason why I am interested in the 6CG7 the specs are the same as the 6SN7...
