No need for an interstage transformer, today I use MOSFETs as source followers. They have enormous gm compared to tubes, so add absolutely negligible distortions compared to transformers.

I agree there's no need for an interstage but this is rather a matter of curiosity and experimentation.
I am inspired by this design from 1930s
But as much as I like the idea of zero bias, class B operation of 6N7 creates more problems than it solves.
It's hard to find a suitable interstage transformer and match it with a beefy driver tube.
I think I will eventually settle down on another double triode like 6080 or 6BL7 that operate in class A.
