6n18p 6n1p 6n2p project needed

first post so hello everybody

i've recently had enough of reaping on valve theory so i am looking to learn by applying. i've ordered a load of valves from russia 6p18p, 6n2p and 6n1p, i was hoping some body could sueggest a good project for me to start with. not really bothered whether it is guitar or audio.

You might want to think a little about what you would like to do - if you go in the direction of guitar projects then I can move this thread to Instruments & Amplifiers..

You haven't mentioned anything about your skill level so you might want to start there, and I would certainly also recommend reading the newbies and high voltage safety threads before doing anything.

I believe the tubes you have purchased are probably most suitable for things like guitar pre-amps and phono stages due to medium to high mu of the types purchased. Not the easiest point of entry in either case, but manageable with care and patience.

as for my skills, i have a lot of understanding of desinging with silicon based effects, amps, etc, and i understand a lot of valve theory (including dangers), but i struggle to apply that theory as i think i just read too much with nothing in front of me to mess about with.

i was thinking the 6n1p would be good for line level amps in audio mixers? i agree about the other two though, that's why i originally bought them, fancied my hand at a guitar SE 5W-ish but couldn't find anything for el82/6p18p

i was wondering if anyone has any experience with these valves, in audio or guitar and could let me know how they sound?

Hi akadazzle, this guy used a EL82/6p18p to build a Champ clone. 5wattamp He used a ECC82 as well, but you could use a 6n2p which is similar to the ECC83/12AX7 which is what the champ originally used. The output transformer should have the same Primary impedance as the Champ transformer eg 4.5k to 6k or so. RS components do an output transformer 210-6475 which will give you about 3watts. Well, when you got all the theory, why would you need a schematic 😛

Even better. Designing with valves is a lot easier than with silicon. There is no current gain or Base current. (As long as you don't go into grid current operation)

The reason why you won't find anything is really very simple. Neither the EL82 nor the 6П18П were much used for audio amplification. Their primary use was vertical sweep in television receivers. There were much better tubes for audio in the 8-range (noval socket) like EL84 and EL86.
Furthermore a 6П18П is not really an EL82. They were just used for the same purpose.
You can't just tell how a tube sounds. Everybody will tell you another story. It depends on so many factors (power supply, output transf., driver stage, feedback, etc.) that it seems kind of funny to hear such a question 😉

I added the 6П18П datasheet in my post. There are even triode curves ! Just use some simple SE amps as guidance and use the specs in the sheet to build what you want.
And to make it easy....when you take a EL84 amplifier as basis, you will just have to adjust your screen voltage and cathode resistor

in answer to Manta, "Well, when you got all the theory, why would you need a schematic". i aren't entirely sure i have the theory till i put it into practice. and as for asking how tubes sound, different op amps sound better than others , i assumed the same would be true with tubes.

thank you for the datasheet i've been looking for that for ages, and thanks Bone for the idea, i think i'll defo be trying that out
 
OK, now I know what you mean. The thing is, you can just swap an NE5532 for an OPA604 without difficulty. These integrated circuits work on wide operating voltage range and gain is set just by the feedback.
But you can't just swap an ECC82 with ECC83. The operating points won't match as won't the gain and other parameters.
Of course there are debates about the sound of the same tube from different manufacturers.

Just spotted this and thought you might be interested to hear a clip I recorded with an amp I've just finished.

The amp uses a 6N1P feeding a 6N2P feeding a 6N1P into one of Ampmaker's 4Watt PP output transformers.

The lead guitar was recorded from a couple of mics pointed at a 4x12 cab.

decided to try things with an el84 first then mod when i happy with pre amp, just had a couple of solid state amps come my way and had to take a lot of time of the valves because of it.

in my time between different repairs i have come up with this, feel free to criticise, and plz ignore the mistake what makes the 220k load look like a pot

well my order of 6j32p never turned up from old ruskie so in the end i've thrown
together 6n2p-->volume-->6n2p-->tone/master-->6p18p
preamp are standard operating at around 220v each. the power amp is a 5k load, 250v plate, 240v screen with 2k2 stopper, 200ohm cathode resistor bypassed with 100uF.

very happy with the sound, so thank you for the pointer people. one of the best amps i've owned to date, i'm currently feeding it into an 8 ohm peavey pacer speaker atm. sounds awesome!!!

two last q's tho, i want to see what it sounds like in triode mode and screen bypassed with cap
the triode mode question is more a case of can i just throw in a mini toggle spdt to change mode when turned off, or would i need a better quality switch?
as for screen bypass i don't quite understaand how to dra the tangent on the tride curve to determine the internal resistances.
 
seeing as using the anode load yields a lower roll of does that mean i could get away with
c1(in uF)=(1/(2*Pi*40*5000))*10^6=0.79577 so 1uf np? would this be safe? i won't be causing oscillations by doing this will i? also i was going to bypass it to ht rather than cathode, am i right in assuming it makes no difference?
