Seems to me that if S1 is closed the secondary is shorted.

Maybe my switch drawing ins't clear: it switches the cathode directly to ground or through the secondary 😉

The EL84 idea still appeals to me, especially when directly coupled. Don't know if a PS of about 370V will do..I'll study the curves again and while I'm at it try to grasp the idea of load.. I'm pretty sure I'll go for autobias btw.

Well now that makes perfect sense...🙂 Just poor schematic reading skills on my part.
