I experimented with the similar 5840 tubes for use as a preamp to be installed inside the guitar. My tubes were all Raytheon brand. They worked reasonably well. Plenty of gain, minimum microphonics, and easily overdriven by a cheap single coil pickup.

I never finished the guitar project, since job loss forced a relocation and almost 3 years of no work on the guitar and amp stuff.

My renewed efforts have been focused on directly heated tubes to reduce the total power consumption and heat build up. I am experimenting with a Graph Tech Ghost pickup system which has 6 individual piezoelectric saddles, which means 6 preamps. Six 5840's, a 6021 dual triode, a dozen mosfets, and a couple of opamps just for the analog stuff burns about an amp from a 7.2 volt RC battery. Too much heat, not enough battery life.
