6146 Amp Feasibility

Ooh yea, I was looking at EL34 pairs, and 45ish USD for a pair of JJ EL34s seems to be a good deal. I'll look at different output transformers, but the reason I was looking at the Edcors was that the price was good. I'm just a teenager without a job, so I don't have more than a couple hundred USD to spend on a project. I'll do some more research!

The Edcor transformers are a killer deal for what they are, if you can deal with the 6-8 week lead time. That said, shipping costs for them tend to be pretty high. If you can deal with the fact that an A470 clone is about $125, then they are a worthwhile step above the Edcor. Keep in mind, however, that many fantastic amps have been built with Edcor output transformers.

Okay, thanks. I'll do some research. If I'm building with EL34s, I would like to build something stereo because the tubes are so much cheaper. 40ish watts per channel is PLENTY for me. I'll probably listen well below peak output. For EL34s, does it make sense to be running them in UL? Seems like a lot easier than attempting anything with 6146s with my skillset at the moment. For EL34 UL, should I get 50 watt transformers? or more?

I'll look into the Dynaco transformers vs Edcor transformers. I can probably wait the lead time from them, that wouldn't be a problem, except for the fact that I'm kind of impatient.

Andy: That design is one of the ones that gave me the idea for a 6146 Amp, using that very transformer. However, as has been said, it doesn't have that extra screen winding, and the 6146s look to be very unlinear in pentode mode. I would have built a design like that with regulated G2 instead, but I was told that it would be hard to wrap enough feedback around the Edcor OPT.

Thanks everyone!

Well, I know I'm changing my mind a lot, but with my limited budget, I'm probably best off building an EL34 monoblock, and then once I feel I can spend the money, building an identical second one. How much better is the Dynaco iron than the Edcor iron? Shipping from Edcor is quite expensive for me.

IlikeTech,

Perhaps a new thread.
I like that idea.
I hate having to carefully read through 50 posts just to understand where we started, and where we are (or perhaps where we are on the last posting).

Might I suggest a few things to focus the thread right at the very beginning:

In the title indicate it is for EL34, and whether it is for Single Ended or Push Pull.

In the first post, state your needs / wants: power, price, distortion, damping factor, and what speakers it will be used with, room size, particular music, etc.
(tell us if it is for 32 foot pipe organ recordings).

That is just my idea of how you might help us help you.
Do not think that all who read the new thread will know what your needs and wants are from other posts you have made.
Instead, start with a clean slate.

I hope that brings us a new thread and starting post from you.
Let's start this as an experiment to see if we can get some answers in just a few posts that
brings a solution of an amplifier that you build.

Oh, if you like tube rolling, first use EL34s, and then plug in KT77s. Depending on the amp topology, you may not even have to make any adjustment(s),
but if you need any adjustment(s) they will be few and very easy.

And then, happy listening.
Be proud of what you built!

Very late to put my 2 cents in, but the 6146 has gotten very expensive. No longer made, and ham radio folks hoard them if they have them in a transmitter. It's a decent tube and likes high voltage. A car stereo power amp was built with a pair per channel in AB2 using the car stereo to provide the power for the grid drive. Odd but interesting.

The 1625 is very similar to the 807 and has the same ratings but different heater and pinout. No longer made either but in less demand than the 6146.

None of the three types are the best for audio though they have been used a lot for it and were cheap at various times in the past.
