5" projector with psone. how to start?

Hello
i have read so many things in the last days and i'm all confused so i'll once again ask for help in this forum.
I'll use a psone lcd and the optique kit from exclusiv-online.
The light source i'll use an hallogen projector now and after see image on the wall i'll buy a better light HQI.
now my questions is.. how to start? :xeye:
1º question: the center of the fresnel before i cut has to be on the exact center of the lcd? how can i center both? any special way?

2º question: what should be the distance between the fresnel and the lcd? theres any focus that has to be done here?how can i do it? the lens i'll use is a high-value Vario-Focus objective with adjustable focal length of 285-330 mm from exclusiv-online.the fresnel is also the fresnel from exclusiv online optic set.

3º the distance from the light to the first fresnel.. this will only be important to don't loose light, right? i mean if it's too close theres parts of the lcd that wont have light and if it's too far theres light that will be lost, right? or theres any focus that has to be done here?

4º the optic kit that i bought also has a condensator and a reflector.. where should i use this in my project? theres no use for this 2 things in a 5" projector?

I'll have more questions in the next days but let me first understand this basic ones.

Thank you 🙂

Easiest way I believe to "start" is to get yourself a sheet of what ever you will be making the base of your projector out of and draw out your plan in actual size. Then you will have a guide for placing all the optics etc in there correct spots

As for the fresnels I have only ever cut one set. I taped the fresnels together then marked out the size required cut one edge, then taped it again, cut the next edge then taped it again and so on and so forth. until all four sides were cut.

I place my fresnels 10mm from the lcd, this seems to work extremely well.

As for light placement, again I find the best way to get the optimal distance is by running the lamp on the above formentioned sheet with the plan on it and adjusting it until the light is evenly covering the LCD panel.

Definately use the reflector and condenser in your projector, obviously the reflector goes behind the lamp and the condenser between the lamp and your lcd as close to the lamp as you can safely get it. I run both the reflector and condenser 3mm from the lamp seems to yeild excellent results thus far. *note...when fabricating a mount for the condenser take into account for a little expansion when it gets hot i suggest some form of spring mounting of it this is how I tackled it

Goodluck with the build bud and welcome to the forum 🙂

thanks for your reply.
today i'll buy material to mount the fresnel and the lcd than i'll start with my tests.
the light will probably be the last thing even knowing that it's very important, but i'll start testing with a halogeen lamp, the diference that the light will make in the end is more or less light projected, right? it wont make the image more crisp or whatever, right?
one friend told me to don't cut the fresnel before split or i'll damage the second fresnel.with you nothing happend with the fresnels?
where should i use fans? pointed to the light and pointed to the lcd?or i should only put them in the open space between the light and the first fresnel to the air flow?
can you suggest me some fans, easy to mount to someone without knowledge in the eletronic part? or show me an example just like with the light set you built..
Thanks for your answer.

Wrong actually...the colour temp on the halogen is too low the colours of the projectred image will be all out of whack, your will most likely have a yellowish image. The position (distance wise from LCD etc) of your halogen lamp in your PJ will almost certainly be different to that of a MH too.

"one friend told me to don't cut the fresnel before split or i'll damage the second fresnel.with you nothing happend with the fresnels?"

Also incorrect you can cut the fresnel when they are split or unsplit without damaging them, just take care when doing so. probably easier to get them identically cut when in un-split form though.

Placement of fans will i guess depend on the style of PJ you are planning on building alapimba, people throughout the forum have mounted fans in varies positions and ways, one on your lcd is almost surely a must though. You can check my thread to see how I went about the cooling myself or my website as I have just uploaded the cooling side of the PJ on it

Probably best to use standard computer case fans mate, get yourself a 12VDC 1amp power supply unit from an electronic store for around 20-30 bucks to power them, really very very simple no special electronic experience is needed alapimba only two wires on each fan to hook up to the psu (+ & -) Mine looks a little like this mate

As you can see I used terminal blocks and also incorporated a fan speed controller. Run the wires from you psu to the fan speed controler then to the terminal block after this is done its just a matter of connecting up the fan wires to the block, simple and neat.

80mm & 120mm fans are the "norm" I have also used a blower fan for the cooling of my lcd

Hope this is of some help alapimba 🙂

hello
here is some pictures of what i have done so far.
i only placed the lcd and fresnel together. and insert the objective in a piece of wood to test the distances.
let me know if you think i should change anything.

my settings to test and results
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

i this is normal? i mean.. i have the projector at 220cm from the wall and my projected image as about 75cm... can i do something to get a bigger image?
(my objective is adjustable focal length of 285-330)

here is some really pictures.

when i test my projector i have light in the edges.. it's because theres light passing inside the projector? i know that my setup is still far from perfection but i wanted to understand where that light come from. i also saw it on other projects but i never understand what has to be done to fix it.
here is a picture with the light that i'm refering.

oh it seams easy 🙂 thanks
Theres any special fans that you can recommend.. i don't want the projector to make noise 😀
the light has to be powered in a diferent way, right?
can it be mounted all together inside the box and only one cable will be out of the box? it's hard to do? if it's very hard i'll make it with 2 cables but 1 would be much better 😎

yeah i'll buy some of that blocks. i guess it's better..
about the fans i don't know what to buy..
I guess i'll use the psone lcd transformer like I_eat_flowers did. it's 7.5v at 3.0A. i saw many people recommending 12v adapters this means my fans will run slowly?!?

another thing.. i just come from a eletronic store and they didn't had any HQI lamp at the moment. the man from the store made a few questions that i was like.. "what? i just want a 250w HQI lamp and everything else to power it up"
i'd like to understand a bit better all this thing around the HQI lamps..
compared to an Hallogen lamp that is what i'm using now.. it has more light? i know the hallogen is more yellow.. but it has more light? i mean.. if i bought a 150w HQI set the light would be the same than the one i have now with my hallogen projector (its also 150w)? or it's completely different?
Other thing... why HQI? what this lamps has of so special? sorry if this question sounds stupid but i didn't realize yet :xeye:
HQI will be so hot like this hallogen that i have now? because this thing gets really very hot after 1 or 2 minutes.. theres any thing other than fans to make it cooler? or maybe another kind of lamps that will work as good as HQI but more cool...
the last think related to light..i was thinking in one thing that i haven't see anyone doing so i don't know if it's possible.. in my room i can regulate the light.. i mean darker or lighter.. it can also be done with a HQI set? maybe it would be a good idea for the moments when the black part of an image is grey due to the excess of light. No? just an idea.. 😀

Thats it for now.
if anyone can recomend some fans that don't do many noise please tell something.

Thanks
