Hey guys. I'm fairly new to audio, but I've always been into electronics. I took three years of electronics in high school but It's been a few years and I haven't kept up with it. Now to my question. I have been looking for a audio system for my computer. I have a big monitor and watch a lot of dvd's on it and I want to take advantage of the sound card that I purchased which has the capability of 5.1 surround sound. I have looked all over the internet and every speaker system that is specifically for a computer is no more than 200w. I like the idea of building my own amp from scratch, and purchasing or building the speakers to go with it. I know how to use a soldering iron, and a multimeter. I just need a good schematic of a kick a** amp/speaker setup, and a breakdown of how it should be setup for optimal performance. I know one of you guys can help me.

You don't need lots of watts really, just good efficient speakers.
If you'd like to keep it simple, you could build 5 channels of LM3886 based amps. This would easily out-do any off-the-shelf PC speaker set you could get.
As for a sub, well you would have to build the whole sub including box, so unless you're up for that, you might as well buy one.

As far as building anything I don't have a problem with. I would rather the whole system be built by me than strore bought. All that I need is a good set of directions/schematics and a list of stores that I can purchase the materials from.
Yeah, forget about the wattage for now! First you need to decide what speakers you can fit in the room. Bigger are generally more efficient. And, of course, big ones do kick more *ss generally. Budget?
