" ... if you can show me a standard cd player, say a Marantz CD63, that can be retrofitted with an all singing all dancing all reading drive mechanism ..."

Marantz CD 63 MKii = eBay.co.uk = US$300+ (used).
Oppo Digital 981 = oppodigital.com = less than US$250 (new).

Mod required = an active credit card.

I know what you mean ... but why kick that ol' mule, when these new trotters can play all formats, what ever your persuasion.

The problem with digital devices is that they have about a 2 years life to obsolete cycle ... and are usually more inexpensively replaced than updated or moded ... although I prefer to consider this a reward, rather than a problem.

(If you insist on making mods, do it to something with legs ... something that can handle modern DVD-A & SACD & MP3/CDs, plus all the rest ... I plan on making several mods to my Oppo 981 power supply and around the built in 24bit/192k analog output (Cypress chip). ... and then next year I'll probably replace it entirely with something better and probably cheaper. 😎 )

Can you give a link to some of these? Would like to give it a go.

For a start, I've just employed Bernhard Phlaschgyt, the world renowned interior designer, to remodel my home and he says any other Cd player would ruin the feng shui of the room.

He could be right, so why take the chance?

You could stick the whole Oppo unit inside that Marantz chassis ... best of all worlds?

As Ricky Nelson said: "You can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself ..."

ok thanks that is now very clear thanks to your explanations.

By the way I read the TASCAM doc, very interesting. They allow either DVD or SACD, which one you deem is more adequate ?

No. The Tascam writes data on DVD+RW discs. These data can be PCM or DSD, but you need to move them over to a computer for further processing to either DVD-V, DVD-A, or SACD. Cheep software for making DVD-Vs and DVD-As exists, but for SACD you'll need professional tools and these come in the category 'if you have to ask the price then ...'.

It is also not very wise to use a DV-RA1000 on 192kHz, as its DVD transport, or rather the way it is employed here, is very error-prone. One write error during recording and the process stops! This aggravates with higher data rates.
At least on the 1000HD you can record to hard disk and later on transfer to DVD.

The in-built ADC convertors are decent, but no more. The pre-ADC analogue circuitry is overly complex and fed from mediocre supplies. I have just bought a PCM4202 evaluation board that, after modding, will be pressed into service as a (hopefully) superior outboard ADC.

" ... how well does the Oppo zoom video? I'm looking at one for my widescreen setup, and using the plasma's zoom so movies can fill the 16x9 screen isn't great. ..."

I set my player to 16/9 (fixed) and it plays everything out to the edges of my 16/9 Samsung LCD (so far). 4/3 does not fill out left & right when set to 16/9 (fixed) ... so sometimes I change it to 16/9 (automatic) on the Oppo setup. There is a "zoom" function on my Samsung display, but I never use it. The Oppo 981 player "up converts" all media to maximum where possible ... "HD Up-Conversion to 720p/1080i/1080p " ... I just programmed it yesterday to play the PAL Zone 2 stuff from Europe too = works great! 😀 ... I may have the only Zone 2 player on the block!

Audio quality: I just added some snubbing caps (at the main +/- 12 VDC power connctors) on the DAC board and can't see (hear) any improvements. I suppose I will go to the surplus house and get some polystyrene caps and add those as well ... I really can't complain about the audio output, I would just like to see if it needs improvement or not ... that is the main reason I got this unit = it plays every kind of audio disc format ... and incidently it now plays ALL the video types except Blue Ray. 😀
