4-pin Neutrik XLR for Ortho to Taps Build ?

So I got my local electronics guy to build up some cables for a pair of ortho / planar magnetic headphones, the config is :-

(Small cable 1) 3.5" TRS to 4-strand to female 4-pin XLR for portable amp

(Small cable 2) speaker taps 4- strand to female 4-pin XLR for desktop amping

(Big cable 3) Male 4-pin XLR to planars left/right

When I tried out the cabling on the 3.5" cable from computer to the portable amp to orthos.... when I shift balance on my computer sound settings slider from left to right, neither side of headphone cuts out ! It is like a shared mono or something ! (The 3.5" to 3.5" interconnect behind the new cable and portable amp are fine from using with other headphones.)

When I try the cans on speaker taps, it only goes out to one side of headphone.

Any cable gurus know what has happened ?

I asked him for a balanced cable set-up, but his English is not good.
