ah ok sorry, here they had been running closer to ~90CDN. At that price, hard to argue with.

What about Dayton Reference series paper? Or peerless HDS? I don't know how pricing is on those in europe but both are solid choices.

-is the 22 the RNY or the RNX? ..there is about a 2db average difference between the two which could impact your choice of mid..

I'm thinking about 84-85 db mid, preferably with a 4" or smaller diameter.

i am currently working on a 3-way and having faital pro 3fe22 and visaton frs8m to test for best midrange performance

they are both cheap and has paper cones

i use them only in a narrow bandwidth as a bridge between the tweeter and double 6" woofers

using a midrange driver is very nice, i would like to try a dome midrange some day

I recently asked a similar questions, and received many responses.

In the end, out of several choices for ~90dB/W midrange I ended choosing Monacor MSH 115.

I am happy with that choice and it sounds great, even running fullrange, naturally lacking in the bass register, but balanced and warm.

It's also a pretty cheap midrange, the only real price comparison was Faital 3FE22/25, 4FE32/35.


The Monacor MSH 115 cost me £35 GBP or thereabouts, so it fits in your budget

Well, based on a ~725 Hz max - 1100 Hz min XO points where they quit being point sources, then for equal power distribution: [725*1100]^0.5 = ~893 Hz mean = 34400/pi/893 = ~12.26 cm/~4.83" effective piston diameter [not frame size] and at a ~6900 Hz max HF XO it's ~4.88 cm/1.92", so not knowing what XO's you're considering I'll let you do the math to find the size theoretically required to narrow down your choices. 😉

It's certainly overlooked. I overlooked it until recently when it was suggested. Most the Faital small drivers 3FE and 4FE look quite usable.

Neither Faital or Monacor frames are round.
For the Monacor, theres no need to recess the driver, if that is why round frames are preferable. The front frame is perhaps 1.5mm thick.

But it is small part of what put me off the Faital drivers, where flush mounting would be difficult, designed for rear panel mounting.

Monacor MSH-115 is flat stamped frame, so almost flush when surface mounted. The Faital frame looks much stronger however, and I dont know if I can make a success of rear mounting a driver yet! Though I have a few cheap drivers, with the same thick paper mounting rings.
