i have a 3m 9550. i found out that you can order the flip in zoom lens that is on the 9700 and 9880 as a kit and add on to any 9000 series projector.
also as far as retrofiting the projector for a MH bulb similar to the ones in previous posts, i found a few aquarium light sites that offer the two ended MH bulb, along with the needed bracket and mounts, and the electronic ballast. all together about 200.00 like previously described.
the 3m 9000 series have a single ended mount with the bulb changer assembly right in front of the spherical reflector. im thinking of removing the existing mount and there looks to be enough room to out the double ended MH assembly in its place between the reflector and the first of the triplet lens assembly.
in doing so, this projector has great potential with such a kit because it may be difficult to find one that already has the two ended mount for the halogen bulbs, at lest thats what the other posts on the subject say.
has anyone besides YMH done this, or tried this on a 3m ohp?
heres the link to the site i found the bulb setup
http://www.hellolights.com/2555hqidoube.html
link to the ballast and hqi mount w/ bracket
hope this helps.
btw, i want to upgrade to a xga tv-4000 since i have a z350.
the tv-3000 just doesnt give me enough out of the panel.
any opinions on the tv-4000

I dont know any one who modded a 3m but ROLM has modded an Apollo http://members.cox.net/rolm/update/
i plan to do a similiar project when i get enough money.
I hope you succeed if you decide to retro your OHP please keep me informed on your project.

yeah jimmy, rolm's posts are the ones i was refering to. correct me if im wrong, but i thought i read that he was saying on his website that that type of mod was sort of limited to ohp like apollo's where the two ended bulbs were originally used. i could have read it wrong.
what im suggesting is to use this setup because the color temp of the 250 MH is like 5500K (which should be close to the 6000k ideal?) and this ballast can easily be wired into the existing 120v switch on the ohp itself (ie. wire nuts) if the mount available with the bracket is ordered with it. i think i read the bracket is highley recommended because otherwise the bulb might break if not aligned properly, and going by the size they state, the hqi bracket should fit nicely on the old mount holes between the two.
What i will do first is order just the bracket(only 20.00) and try to mount it to verify the needed spacing.
any other thoughts guys?
ill post some pics as i go along, but im still setting up the theater room and it may take awhile as i am also looking for an audio system and lighting and wall covering ideas, as well as the projector components(tv-4000, retro-fit kits, screen etc.)
so far even my wife has been happy with the results of the plastex, z350, 3m 9550 and tv-3000) but i may still break down and just buy an xga projector. this was cheaper and more fun!

thanks for the heads up on the zoom lens lifter.
can you elaborate on why it turns corners blue?
im just curious....

1, my name is YWH
2,those are very expensive, my friend got those(two ended MH bulb, bracket and mounts, coil inductance ballast) all together not more than US$100.00 at Canton. if you used a electronic ballast, the light is not jarless, the image is aglimmer.coil inductance ballast no this.
3, the lamp of your link is not llittle dot lamp-house

Re: Re: 3m ohp users, what do you think of this retrofit idea
YWH, please give me a link of where i can get it for 100$
If u have more than one link post them. sites in ENGLISH would be great
Thanks

1. i apologize YWH for the incorrect reference to your name!
(i was going by my memory of your signature from posts)
2. i am having difficulty undertanding your posts. i realize this is due to a language barrier and is partly my fault for not knowing any of the dialects you may be fluent in. this would be easier if we both werent trying to understand each other from different word usage.
3. correct me if my interpretation is incorrect, but you are telling me that the ballast type is incorrect for this type of application as it will produce an inconsistant flicker with this type of bulb? i should continue to search for the tye of bulb and ballast you referenced?
4. i am thankful for your input.
5. negative design, this is not intended as a flame, but im just really curious what setup you are CURRENTLY using. i just observe that you post an awful lot.
thanks guys

well, upon closer inspection of ROLM's site, his links for the ballast are the same ones i posted, so the info is not new.
BUT i dont understand why YWH says it wont work when it clearly worked for ROLM.
All i was suggesting for this thread was that it looks like the 3m ohp should be as easy a retro fit as the apollos, so if you dont have an apollo, a 3m should work just the same!
im interested what YWH thinks about ROLM's ballast since it seems to work for him and i want to try it on a 3m.
i cant make heads or tails of his posts (like i said above, thats my fault not his)

i dont input that much...lol![]()
lol, well im laughing with you! almost every thread i read has you saying "oooohhhhh, man i want to try that!" or " show me pics and links so i can try this too!" it just gets comical after awhile.
i can't say much as there are so many interesting possiblities to read and try on here......
BTW - YWH i'm curious if Yao Ming gets as much attention overseas as he does here. im in houston and they play it out like he's some kind of national hero over there. i know he must have some following over there since he beat out shaq for the start in the nba all-star game due to the online votes he received from his countrymen.

YWH also has a XENON retrofitted OHP i'd say he has a lot of knowledge on this but the language barrier is kinda hard to get past.I have a link to some HQI bulbs 39$ http://secure.ukworlds.com/shopkeeper/P.E.D/sp_19001-10.html#A94928 in UK money i dont know what it translates to in USD$ but im sure its cheaper than hellolights. I dont know if you seen this thread but if you havent here it is http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9922 i hope it helps.I would like to know what you plan to do..feel free to IM me on AIM 🙂

im just curious....
I have a 9850 that came w/ the zoom lens. The OHP has an adjustment wheel to change the color temp. If I turn it in the "blue" direction, the corners start to turn blue first. Just the nature of the lenses I guess.
When the zoom lens is not on, I can adjust it so that it is perfectly white w/o blue corners.
When the zoom lens is on, the corners are blue even when I turn the knob all the way towards the "red" direction. It's a feature for projection panels, and most projection panels will fit within the blue corners. But if you have a 14" LCD or whatever, you can't use it.
It doesn't do much anyways, just makes the image a little bigger. I need something that makes mine smaller. Way too big already.
Well board, my first post 🙂
I bought a 3M 9550 this weekend (75 euro). I am going to convert it to to a MH setup. The biggest problem I see is that the space between the reflector and the condensor lens is only 2cm. This means lamps HQI & CDM (single & double ended) of upto 150W will 'fit', others wont 🙁
But even the 150W MH lamps put out over twice the amount of the original 400W bulb so it should still be an improvement, and it wont get as hot as a bonus.
There is plenty of room for the ballast beneath the mirror so installing the MH lamp shouldnt be a problem.
The ballast will come from a used spotlight (20 euro) which has a 70W MQI/70/T6/43 double ended bulb already installed. I'm told the spot/ballast will also accept a 150W HQI.
I'm hoping to finish the conversion comming weekend and I will post pics if succesful.

LIFTER- thanks for the info. i like the 9850 projector because it also has the extra ac outlets built in, but i found a deal on the 9550. im using a z350 which has a 9.something" diag. panel. since im using a smaller panel, and you are using a 14", do you think the zoom would be wotrh it. i see your point about making it too big, and i think i will actually be better off with the xga tv-4000 to make my image larger than the smaller vga image im getting out of the panel with the vga tv-3000. it will make it bigger with better resolution without the problems of blue corners and too big an image. my ohp is 10' from the wall right now, but i thought the zoom would be nice if say i had the projector in a bigger room when i want the biggest picture possible, say like my warehouse where for the super bowl i had an 132" diag screen size with the projector back as far as possible.
and for the guy with the new post about the 9550 and the 150w setup, im happy for your input!! lets see what we can come up with.

is this?
75 euro=75 US$? if the price is that ,that is very cheap.
the 2cm between the reflector and the condensor lens is enough, look this page, This means lamps the 250W will 'fit', its diameter is 163 MM only.
but if you dont use 100" screen, not mroe than 70"screen,150W HQI is OK.

Hi! qwkbird
i have anguage barrier .
maybe, my meaning is not "correct me", but "consult" only.
about the ballast type :
1,electronic ballast: it was made from semiconductor, not heavy
, it can be used, but we give up it, because it is not better, the light is flicker, like the monitor with 40-50Hz,
2,coil inductance ballast :it was made from impregnated cable and anisotropic sheet steel , like a big transformer,it is better , we are CURRENTLY using it.
I have never says electronic ballast won't work when it clearly worked for ROLM.
Hi Negative Design
the lamp can be used, Metal Halide 250 HQI.
what is hellolights?

Hi YWH,
www.Hellolights.com is a website that charges WAY too much.
does any one out there know what 39 eros translates in USD$ because i found HQI's for 39 euros.
**edit** i wish I could use 150 watt HQI's but its only around 10,000 LUMENS and my DYS OHP bulb are 600 watt 17,000 LUMENS the HQI would last longer but in theory it would be dimmer 🙁 **edit**
Thanks

@ywh
I dont have my LCD converted yet. Maybe the 150W MH is bright enough for me, there is lots of light comming out already with the 70W MH bulb.
I just finished converting the OHP to MH, a (sorry, bad) picture:
