Wow no kidding ,cheapest being like over $20 wow. I'd like to build my own external filter box before it gets to my fuse and switch -- is this feasible? I can do at a later date. That way I can proceed with my case and use standard iec connector with switch /fuse (it's like $5).

It should be ok to remove the DC ground for testing, and try it.
