Well, jerryo, you started really strong and then ya fell apart on me!

Let me state that I am not the type that runs around admonishing anyone for their use of recreational drugs. I have performed my own extensive research, performed countless times over a number of years, into the effects of the keef and other, more lively substances. After a while, the funding dropped out, and I had to abondon my studies. That, and the crushing alcoholism and addiction. But I'm feeling much better now! (wild eyes and creepy smile) Let's hear it for AA! Anyone? Hello?

Instead of arguing whether weed is good or bad (wrong forum), I will pose this question as it relates to listening to music (right forum)...what about the fact that weed is a halucinagen? Would it not then mar the musical experience, causing one to not hear what is being played but instead a distorted performance?

I'm not gonna win this one, am I? Screw it, I'm going to a meeting...

"No, seriously man, put that plain white piece of paper under the front left rubber foot of the amplifier, take a pull off this Graffix, and then try to tell me there's no improvement in Micky Hart's kick drum!"
You got it all wrong - the blue paper goes under the left foot, the white paper's for rolling ...

N.B. Try to sort out the colors before getting involved with any small tabs of paper with cute pictures on.

I recall one time, after conditioning myself with top shelf Columbian marching powder, listening to "Rabbit One" by The Masters of Reality, and concluding that it was the best song that I had ever heard. Simple to explain, really...I modified one component in the signal chain: me. Back then, you could have probably gotten me to buy two Clever Little Clocks and then caught me trying to use one on the vacuum at 4AM on a Tuesday.

I think you won it.
Logically, if your audio system is producing exactly what you like when sober, then the presentation would be inferior when impaired.

There's only a small problem with that--You'd have to admit what you really want out of your audio system and design/cause it to do that.

There's only three things that I know about accomplishing this.
1). Starting with a clean, wise, and stable system before hacking it, works much better than the other way around.
2). Tomfoolery (voicing) is easiest at the preamp level, which is nice because an amplifier can have more than one "flavor" of preamp. For instance, tube/moosefet, partysound baxandall, slightly raspy 6n11 (extrapolation filter for seriously dull source), and nice clean discrete high current dealie, can all be switched with a 4p4t rotary switch. A mood switch? 🙂
3). Loss vs drive: The audio system designed to make a big presentation in a really big area is rather painful when used in a small area and then the big system does not make the expected presentation at all. The small area (smaller room) decreases loss considerably--That is now a mismatch for the large audio system, but you don't have to knock down your walls. To put the loss back in electronically (and stop the painful blare), one can use bridge amp, capacitor at input/output of a gain stage, capacitor paralleled with a resistor or voltage divider at input/output of a gain stage, and/or padded midrange, padded tweeter. I think that this can work better than chemicals.

Any suggestions on what to add to this list?

I am very sorry you have had those problems. I was the one that first posted about pot smoking. I tried a little back in the 60s and early 70s, then gave up drugs entirely for over 30 years. Then I was diagnosed with cancer. After surgery I was on narcotics for the pain, then went into chemotherapy. I decided to try pot again because of what I had heard about it helping with symptoms. I am not trying to defend my actions here, but I must say that, to me, listening to music with a slight buzz was much more pleasant than listening from the bathroom while pucking my guts out. YMMV

The point I was making is that you need space, a quiet space, to listen to music, and yes that does mean giving your dear ones a wad of notes to go shopping. But it also means allowing your "mind" to be free of all distractions. It is no good putting on your favourite piece of music if in fact you are actually just sat there wondering how you are going to pay your credit card off! Hashish is a very good short cut for this. I do not smoke anymore (not for some time) so I tend not to listen to music so deeply or so often as I once did; distractions are everywhere. I do miss it though.
I'll enjoy a two fingers of single malt whiskey, but this does not have the required effect......what can you do! it is still illegal where I live.
If you are hallucinating whilst smoking you are doing it to much; it's the same as falling over or slurring when drinking to much.
Moderation in all things; including moderation!
🙂

Sorry guys, I forgot one thing from the list on post #24.
Susan Parker's unforgettable application of an output transformer.
That's definitely a "anti-blare" design.

Its one of the things that causes the drive force to slack so that you can crank up your audio loud and still have it enjoyable (despite small room / point blank range).

So, what other non-drug ways are there to make loud audio enjoyable in small room/point-blank range?

Awesome!

Too much thinking:
Speaking of source, I'll bet that Susan Parker's amplifier could be built to smaller scale, as a really fun preamp; but, since her point was also a difference at electromotive force, we'd have to use at least a bridged power amp for a form of isolation so that the return force from the speaker doesn't slam into the ground plane that includes the nfb divider (bridged with split rail power doesn't do that).
