3 way crossover questions: Adding 8in midbass to existing Dynaudio 2 way setup

Your lower cross to the mid is going to interact with the upper mid cross. Maybe by an amount which is small enough not to matter. Interaction is not a bad thing except that it changes the response, so you want to have an idea what's going on. Interaction will be less if you cross lower.

Regarding the sensitivity, the problem you have with them in a cabinet compared to a car, is the cabinet width allows the bass to wrap backwards and it will be more quiet. This is the baffle step. An extra 6dB can be handy here, or you can lower the mid/treble instead, or equalise before your amp.

We might be able to run some basic simulations. They will be better if you have crossover values, better if you have driver impedance curves, better if you have response curves and better if they are in cabinet.

A second order high-pass filter tends to be less sensitive to the lower impedance peak. Otherwise impedance compensation takes three extra components.

Thanks, I didn't know about the baffle step & reading up on it was enlightening.

I might do some basic driver 2 way tests in the built boxes, then I might have a more clear indication of real world performance.

I'll reply back in this thread when I've had some time with them!

Just letting you all know that I ended up getting a DSP & separate amp to run the 8's active, allowing me to fiddle to my hearts content & try different XO slopes at different points, parametric EQ etc etc.

It's been a lot of fun so far & the speakers sound very nice.

Thanks again for the input & points put forward to help me to pause, gain some knowledge & perspective

Cheers
