3-Way active DSP speaker with Faital and Dayton

Hello,

my friend Oli (Rese66) told me, that some of you might be interested in my current project. So I post some photos and in case of any questions, I will try to answer them. Okay off we go.

What is in the speaker:
1x Faital 18XL2000
1x Faital W8N8-150
1x Beyma TPL150 the Horn only
1x Dayotn AMTPRO4
2x t-amp Quadro 500 DSP

And here some pics of the speaker build. I name the speaker "fatally", because of the Faital speakers and it's enormous output.

Hi,

yes, sounds really cool and I dont kknow if my Accuton Speakers will beat them. But I am still listening mono, as I am still working on the second one. Right know I am putting bitumen into the cabinet and soldering the wires.

+500 on the mid having its own box, or the 18" cone will push the 8" cone around like a badly-tuned PR. You'll also incur a load of inter-modulation distortion at higher levels, when the 8" cone is pushed towards the end of its linear travel.

Chris

Don't worry folks, the midrange and tweeter have their own chambers, of course.😉

I was very impressed by the tweeter. Even with very bad pieces of music, which up to now have annoyed every loudspeaker, this tweeter was always very relaxed and never sharp. Even at extremely high sound pressure levels.

Hi guys,

Of course the mid and AMT have their own cabinets. The 18 inch monster would kill them otherwise. There is so much pressure in the box ,that we decided to have a complete isolated chamber for the AMT. The AMT has anyway its own small chamber but this was not enough, so we created a complete second chamber and everything is damped with Bitumen.

Hi Chris,

No reason to be jealous.

@ Juhazi: yes, closed box with good cabinet design and activ DSP is my favorite. But I also built very nice other systems, but the benefits of closed enclosures is definitely the size and the precise, punchy bass.

Hi Peter,

There is not so much boost needed, because SPL of the speaker. Well about the Horn, I was able to buy it separately at tphl, but now it seems to be not on stock or available anymore. That's a shame because it is a very nice horn made out of 100% aluminum.

I'm also a big fan of closed boxes. Unfortunately, many people only look at the f3 frequency and think that these speakers produce little bass. In practice, however, this usually works much better than deeply tuned ported speakers. Especially when a lot of SD is used like here.

Hi Riley,

well with active speakers you never reach a final status 😀 To much to play araound with.

Currently everything is crossed over with LR48@120Hz and 2kHz. The AMT can be crossed much lower (1,2 to 1,5kHz), but it sounds better with 2kHz.

Hi CSpg6,
Great project. the t.amp DSP / Amp combination looks neat, I have just a concern for potential fan noise. Is the fan noise noticable at low volume?, do you need to hide the amps away?

t.amp also looks to be very good cost/performance, especially for DIY, have you heard it against other DSP/Power amps?
