Not sure about cogging, but adjusting the field current of a synchronous machine only changes the power factor and not torque/speed of the motor. Besides, having it at a wrong value could lead to issues with efficiency.What is very interesting to me, we could adjust the "magnet" strength - which may greatly reduce cogging.
