2x18 Tapped Horn / Seriell Bandpass Subwoofer

Hi everybody! 🙂

At Pro Light and Sound 2019 in Frankfurt (Germany) i saw and heard Aura Audios XQ48, a 4x18 inch Tapped Horn/ Seriell Bandpass loaded with Faital Pro HP1060. They arranged two of these hellboys in end-fire mode and it blew anything away (YouTube) 😀

Because of this very hot speaker design i developed and built a tiny 2x12 inch Tapped Horn on my own (YouTube). The sounding is fantastic! Dry, kicky and punchy with decent but nice low end. Compared to two MTH 30 the sound pressure is nearly the same and the simulation fits in 95% to the measured response. Driver is the PD.123C01. Plan is attached below.

AND NOW to the main question 🙂 The Aura XQ48 is a little bit to heavy/ to big for my opinion, so i scaled it down to a 2x18 inch hellboy like in the attached pictures below. I plan to build the prototype with changeable front-plates to find the right tuning for me because simulation is a little bit difficult with the higher tuned design (Is S4 the vertical or horizontal width of the front chamber?)

I would be glad if someone can handle this type of simulation. If not, it doesn't matter. Then i will wait until the prototype is built. 😉 Naming will be MTH 46 VX 218, driver either the RCF LF18G401 ,N401 or X401, depending on the final tuning.

And i am interested in your opinions to this kind of subwoofer design. The size is slighty bigger than one of my MTH 46 VS, but with twice the power. I will keep you updated with this project and i am waiting for your response. 🙂

I try to avoid using two (or more) drivers in a row, since they will get slightly different loading due to tapping into the resonant pipe at different places.

I would call this a simple stepped tapped pipe design, and I know they can sound very good, with a very physical and tactile reproduction of bass. Even more so with two 18 inch drivers in a short and reasonably high tuned tapped pipe. 😱😀 I like it a lot!!!

A large quarter wave front resonator can add even more efficiancy, better loading of the driver and more midbass kick and expand the usable passband.

Cheers,
Johannes
