With regards to the original post...
- You'll be fine with 1x15" per side. You can even go quite low if you use a high-excursion driver and plenty of power. I used a nice Beyma driver with 500w/ch and got to 25Hz. Excursion hit 30mm p/p at moderate levels.
- Alpha-15A drivers have a certain mushiness to the bass whenever I've heard them. I much prefer drivers with powerful motors and using EQ.
I'd probably go for an Alpair 12P and a good 15". Cross around 300Hz, EQ the 15" to death and give the Alpair driver a nice amp.

Alpha 15A are still a popular choice among some. Count me (and Martin J. King) in.
Currently using two per side plus one Alpair 12P. See here.

I just changed the crossover point from 220 Hz to 180 Hz and liked it better. Bass EQ is still necessary with my baffle size (ca. 34.25" x 27.5"). Excursion is low at pretty insane levels, but I also implemented a 4th order high pass at 16 Hz (using the MiniDSP).
The design was intended to mimic the old classic simple Japanese OB and the Quad ESL. If I would start again, I'd probably go with a design similar to PureAudioProjects Trio15TB. http://www.pureaudioproject.com/product/trio15tb-open-baffle-speakers/
I might also use the PureAudioProject OB-A15se, which is a customized version of the Alpha 15. Slightly lower fs, lower Qts, higher xmax, higher Rdc. Noticeably higher price, though. 15″ Audiophile Grade Open Baffle Woofers – PureAudioProject
