2x Eminence Alpha 15 & 1 FR

Hi everyone,

I need your help and experience on this!
I now have bought the following gears for my Hifi/HC system:
-Pre: EMOTIVA XMC-1
-Amp: Crown K1
-Amp: LPS Lazare Electronique Digital 2

and i'm wooking in either buying some speakers such as Klipsch RF7 MK2 or Heresy 3 (mostly for their esthetic and feedback from the other owners) price average: 2K€
or completely different :building an open baffle based on Martin J.King work (with a DSP Beringher DCX2496) as many have done, where i would follow mostly his work but with 2 Eminence Alpha 15A + either a well known Tang Band 1808 or any other recommendation Mark Audio 7", 10", 12", Fostex ...
With the wood, the parts and the other stuff i may certainly reach also the 2K€ budget.

First of all: in term of sound, the system will be in a "small" open space (4m*4m, all the space without the grey layer) in a quite big room in "L" configuration (70m²) as you can see here:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

you just see one part of the "L". (Note: right click then open in new window seems OK)

which system should sound better for Hifi & HC? the commercial ones or the DIY ones?

Same question but now in term of performance & quality for the price, because i suppose that many systems sounds good, but all depend on the price you put in it, and if i have to put 2K€ in the speakers i'm looking for let's say the best i can expect 🙂

If the DIY is the best choice, which FR would be the best choice? i will certainly replicate this model:

Finally, in term of speakers position within the wood, is there any guidelines, recommendations? meaning, the first Eminence should be at X cm from the ground, the second Y cm from the first one and the FR should be off-axes of Z cm from the middle and ZZ cm from the ground...

Thanks a lot

HC = home cinema? If so, tiny 'FR' drivers must be XO'd >500 Hz due to action movie's high power mid-bass, lower mids 'slam'/'punch', which means that even if it's nestled in the lee of the dual 15" they still won't sound quite like a single driver due to the long c-t-c spacing, though most folks seem OK with it.

That's a tiny space for those big dual 15 OB.

Most of the time, OB needs room to breathe . Plus that L shaped space will let the bass run away and propagate throughout the whole house.

Have you ever heard an OB speaker? I love them, but it's not for every one. Better find someone that has some and have a listen.

For such a space, and if you still wanted OB sound, I'd look into the Nola Brio. Two smaller cabinets, one driver on OB, supported by one or two subs. I think they would be enough to fill that small space.

Another way to go would be to build corner line arrays. There is a thread already underway in here that could help you. Corner line arrays would certainly have less visual impact in that room, and work reasonably well with the size, while still being full range.

Otherwise, the commercial angle is probably safer, as most shops will let you demo a pair of speakers for about 30 days, by then, you can decide if they fit your current space or not.

Just hitting some of your points:

I’m not a big fan of Heresys. If you use a DCX2496 if you are not using only the digital in and the digital out it is somewhat lame, the analog bits need total replacement if you ar egoing to use the them. I have a pair of those Eminence they are well suited to open baffle but not all that high fidelity, still lots of people like them. Alpair 7x, 10x, and 12x are 4”, 5 1/4” and 6 1/2” drivers. The A10x or A12p would be good midTweeter candidates. I have one more OB project in me and have decided on Alpair 10p. We used Fostex FF85k in our version of King’s OB, but with 2 15s you may do better looking at the FF165wk. I have done up a couple TB W8-1808, a decent driver but overpriced for its performance IMO.

Sadly no i haven't had the opportunity to hear OB speakers or even Klipsch speakers, I've heard the Line Array CBT24 & Apogée Slant 8 speakers, both in rooms with lot of space, and my tiny Focal Sib & Cub
Perceval, would you be kind to redirect me to these line angle array speakers?

there's also the CBT24 line array that can be an option, i've heard them, the sound was excellent, i can still give a try for it even if i bought them from Part Express and send them to France.
The problem is the Subs, i heard the CBT24 with 2 18" sealed dayton audio Ultimax but these will be way too big for my room and buying the cabinet and even the 15" subs will cost me double their price with shipment & taxes, so in this case i would need to find an alternative of these sealed Subs

I didn't have a clue what I was doing, and still don't, when i built my OB. 6 months down the road after a notch filter was implemented the sound is swwwweet. Sold the highly modded cornwalls and gave my Heresy's, which I bought new in 82' to my youngest son.

I agree. 🙂

CBT is something I've been thinking about them myself. But build complexity is high, subwoofers are probably unavoidable. Also all in all not cheap in comparison. Especially, if you stick with the ready-made kit.

Where did you manage to hear the CBT24?

Unless Hawthorn has changed, I'm not thrilled about their crossovers. I've heard them a few times, nice, but no bass. They may be trying to keep the sensitivity up by not dealing with the OB bass loss.

Things could have changed. Been awhile.

here's as graph of my Silver Iris on 2'x3' baffle outdoors - plus effect of 4 ohms series resistor on system response

it used a custom version of Beta 15cx plus Eminence's ASD1001 compression driver. My K18 could to 10x the power with 1/10 the excursion - lol
