Hi,
As in the subject lines I am looking for a suitable replacement for 2N4392, if there is one.
TIA for any help

Hi,
It's a front end, I guess, attenuator to a data acquisition board.
Though 2N4392 is not obsolete, I think it is End of life, and has become difficult for me to source (at the moment, I cannot source via Digikey or Mouser)
My colleague, who know more about jFETs than I, seems to believe there is no real equivalent that can be used.
I am just trying to see if he may be wrong, and there may be a more easily available part.

You could try looking for the equivalent plastic part, the PN4392. These should be available nos, or maybe from some vendors like Central.
Central still sell the 2N, and PN.
As do microchip.
Vendors such as mouse, digikey, and cricklewood (which sadly I have had awful experience with) are all unusable as sources for me, without a 3 month wait and bureaucratic limbo dance. 😀
Hence the thought to search for an equivalent, if indeed there is one suitable.
BS170 does not look remotely similar, sadly.

2N4392 are unusual in that they are a 1.8W to92 case jfet, which is low noise, and quite linear, but with Rdson in the region of 60 Ohms.
If you want to go the Ebay route, there are sellers offering both the 2N and PN variants - not from China, either...
J111 looks closer to an equivalent, other than the Pd being a lot less.
Perhaps I will have an experiment to compare.
Thank you
