2 a60s. one of them fully recapped. bi-wired 76 stock for mid/treb, recapped 82 for bass, the little kit blew them away.
...or complete lack of listening controls, no actual comparison between two complete "blueprinted" (for frequency response, output Z effects) implementations that could be level matched to 0.1 dB, switched in seconds, relying only on memory of days? "before"...
Doesn't the result of any comparison (like "blew them away") ultimately depend on what the particular listener and those of like persuasion want to hear? Surely this varies as widely as people's background in what they appreciate as good sound, whether its technically pure audio reproduction, or with a little tonal colouration and stereo enhancement, or even full-blown SET type 3%+ THD.
Maybe this suggests a lounge forum discussion but basically, you have to know what camp the OP comes from when they make a provocative assertion that a possibly inexpensive kit, module etc. can sound much better than an arbitrarily modified commercial stereo amplifier/speaker setup.
For the little we know of the comparison, I think it's a meaningless claim without some qualification as to whether both systems were bi-wired, the (presumably) A&R Cambridge A60 amplifiers were modified competently or at least performing within their specification and the speakers or whatever were identical, of a respectable standard and in good condition etc.
I'm sure we don't need proof of any of this but knowing what you actually have would lend credibility to what sounds like the excitement of someone who just bought a different amplifier and realized the errors or omissions of their previous gear and modifications. That happens a lot more often than the discovery of bargain product, IME
Were you referring to something like this for example, as the power amplifier electronics or an earlier kit? or maybe this expired Ebay listing ? 😕

Hi . SRETEN they did in 1982. 2sk134/2sj48. A british thump at switch on, still works great, though I would maybe like to try a new chassis/in-out etc as its all DIN round the back.
Any thoughts appreciated.
brian.

IAN.F Yes thats the one. 15quid? a steal for the devices alone.
my speakers..b&w, kef, radford(150hm), klipsch maybe 'blew away' sounds a bit ott but a couple of JDs and a listen revealed a muffled sluggishness to the A60s that could not be ignored.
T/T TD150 Mk2, tp16 Mk3/tpo63/nagaoka mp11.
not top end but not bottom either. regards brian.
BTW Im no expert, just a music lover.
