THE best price I've found is in the UK for $37 shipped. It takes about a week or two to get it but it is the best 250W HQI double ended lamp there is.

20000hrs, 5200k, UV stop,

I can't remember the exact website but the place is called DC lighting. I do know that if you type dclighting.com, it is not the right website. I'm not home right now, but when I do, I'll get it to you.

Second option: I may have an Icecap ballast and a brand new Osram HQI/250W/D/UVS to sell you. I'm thinking of switching my setup to a small form factor lamp, shoot me an email.

Me2,

That Osram lamp is the one I am referring to. I was incorrect on the color temp. 5500k is even better. I'm telling you they go for €22.20 (Euros) at DC Lighting, so whatever the conversion is for canadian, that is the cheapest. add another €7 or so for shipping and it comes out pretty cheap.

The website is here: HQI 250W/D UVS

Check it out!

My offer to sell the 250W ballast and bulb is no longer open. I have not been able to find a small bulb and ballast with specs comparable to that of my current setup (i.e: lamp life, color temp, price)
I think I will keep them and try to find suitable reflector and condensor combination to work with. Plus, I hear Ace may have found a new 250W bulb that can be used. If I hang on to this ballast I could use it as it is electronic and will fire any 250W MH bulb.

Hi Gordon,

I went down there to pick up my bulb and the one they have is different that the one I posted. It is a HQI-T powerstar 250w but its "daylight", single ended (better), no UV protection (much worse) and old stock. The guy there had it for ages and cant sell it but he wont move on the price ($85)

Hes going to try to find one with UVshield but it will take a while. Im going to give him some other part numbers to source and maybe - if there is some interest from others in canada we can get a better rate.

He also asked a lot of strange questions about my use. It seems they get pot growers in there looking for bulbs. They dont believe anyone has another use for bulbs like this -go figure. With the pot heads and grow rips going on in BC its not fun to buy a bulb! :whazzat:

Me2,

Thanks for the info. I don't blame them for being suspicious. You hear about pot busts on the news almost every week. Anyways, any chance you find a source for ballasts? Commercial lighting wants $185 +taxes for a 150W electronic ballast! I ordered a 250W HQI ballast from Brite-Lite... I specifically asked for an electronic ballast and they quoted me $125 for it. I jumped on it right away but when it arrived, it was just a regular magnetic ballast. I knew it was too good to be true.
If you feel like paying that much for a magnetic HQI ballast, they have one in stock.

All the wholesalers I've contact can get whatever you want but... if they don't have it in stock, you have to order them in boxes of 6 or 12. If someone is willing to order you a single piece, you might just need to bite the bullet and pay what they ask.

p.s. Just curious why the lens needs cleaning? I thought it was a sealed unit.

One of the lens surfaces has some faint white opaque stuff. Looks like humidity at first so I expected it to vanish when I brought it inside. (Bought it out in the snow :snowman: if anyone is wondering) Its faint and its in a intermittent ring around the outside 1/4 of the front lens. The quality of the lens is very good- im not complaining. In a camera shop shomething like this would be a couple hundred. To describe the pattern it looks like something got on the back of the lens and was partially scraped off. There are clear areas and some areas with "stuff". This is probably why it ended up at the surplus shed where u got it. I could take a pic but i have to find the adapter to plug the camera into the pc.

Anyway I think the guy at commercial lighting is looking for an angle. When I originally got the bid i got one of the buyers at work to check the price with the lighting company we deal with. This was a price to a buyer at an industrial customer. They had to honor it when i walked in off the street for retail but suddenly they didnt have the exact one i was after and they had this old one for that price. BS i think. We will see when he comes back with quotes and i get my buyer to find a price on those bulbs too.
The purchasing manager will be interested in my story with their vendor. 😉

By the way my price on a ballast there was $90

Apologies if this is going off-topic because its an old comment, but that price is in pounds sterling, not Euros steamer. £22 = 32euro = 42 US dollars = 50 Canadian dollars. Don't forget to add on UK VAT @ 17.5% 🙂

Hope that cleared things up.

Actually if you are not in the UK there is no VAT. I've bought it twice. and it is 5100k not 5500k I don't know what bulb he saw at osram, but I just looked today, and it says 5100k.

Good call on the Pounds VS. Euros. My mistake. Still the cheapest I've found. I would think it can't cost too much more to ship to Canada.

bulbs keep changing

The manufacturers keep changing the bulbs as the technology advances. So sometimes the color temp changes a bit with an upgrade. "Daylight" is fine. Anything 5000 to 5500 will look great.

Sounds like you need to register your projector with the local police, if you live in BC. Just so you don't get a visit by a mob with a battering ram in the middle of the night! 😀
