2021 Unity Horn Kit

I was getting a bit nervous not seeing another Patrick Bateman's thread for some time - and here it is! Very interesting indeed.

Bought a new house and I'm slooooowly moving in. So speaker projects have been on the back burner.

So I had it repainted like this. (Hard to tell the difference, right?)

Once the construction dudes finishing replacing the two year old floors(!) it should be a fairly neat place for a stereo. I'm curious how such a big space will sound, acoustically.

It should sound very live.....very reverberant.
How's the hand clap test sound?

Can be a tough room to tame, ime...
ironically, i find omni-like to work easier than point sources, unless considerable attention is given to acoustics. Kinda like, if you can't beat the room, join it...🙂

Theatre curtains, with 703 panels on the ceiling. Color match the panels. or make accent/decorative covers. I have matching shelf units with strategically placed items to act as diffusers, and decorative, multi drawer wicker units, with the front halves filled with cotton towels for absorption/ damping. That setup is in my only dedicated room. My big room is wide open, with wood flooring, and it is not the one for critical listening. I don't have to worry about waf though, and my girlfriend is a songwriter/ musician, and sound junkie. Congrats on the new digs, Patrick! Glenn.

There is room for multiple distributed subwoofers.

But the hard floor, I surmise it will sound great. A little cold naked but nice curtains will rewarm that big space.

bay windows are great bass absorbers when well made (if no parasitic resonance between the surounding and the glass chassis (being there)

small height ceillings are a hifi nightmare, so it's really ok here and the offset bigger delay should not be as bad as you can find.

In your shoes I will make a little level for a true wood parquet with sand below (believe me. It means not all this flat wood + chip bases you see everywhere) where the listening room is. It just ask a little one or two step : around 10 to 15 cm height between this room and the other one behind... plus it makes it looks like a 60-70s flat suits that had levels !

having light is great 🙂

Congratulated on your new home. I hope everything goes well and have a fun time designing and fixing before you move in.

Looks really nice for a small unity horn kit. The waveguide looks similar to the new JBL waveguide pattern like the M2 or the recent JBL HDI series. All the reviewers that I read said the new JBL HDI waveguide doesn't sounds like a horn speaker but more like a normal dome speaker.

What does the kit comes with? Are you going to make different dispersion patterns for the kit? I assume that this is not unity kit but not a synergy kit, right?

I also read your AMT unity thread and I'm highly interested in this project. I would love an unity speaker that uses other types tweeter beside compression driver for better treble detail, etc.. I wish other talented speaker designer can join together to a AMT unity kit. That would be awsome!!!

Fountek canceled the woofers:

hmmm looks like Madisound has them again:

https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/approx-3-fullrange/fountek-fe85-3-aluminum-cone-full-range/
These woofers are kinda special. Basically there's a ton of small woofers out there, but most of them have a cone that's relatively heavy, and that limits their usefullness in a Unity horn. The cone of the Fountek is almost like tin foil, it's very thin. We want a woofer where ((2 * FS) / QES) equals about 500Hz. For the Fountek, that number is 373Hz. For drivers like the Faital 3FE25, that figure is 275Hz.

So the Fountek isn't just cheaper, it's also superior.

I had no idea it was available again, I figured it was gone forever.

Hmmmmm...
