Back around aught-one I built a set of the full range Adire Audio MTM kits. Bang-for-the-buck is off the charts, but lately I've had a case of the wandering ear. Their bass response is boy-scout honest, and imaging is decent. I find music passages with loud vocals or brass to be a bit harsh. Jazz, bluegrass and rock are the majority of my listening but few genres are ignored.
Since we can't go to live shows these days, I'd love to recreate as much of the experience as I can at home. I have a fairly small room as my listening space, so giant horn-loaded klipsch-esque rigs are off-limits.
I'm not clever enough to design a speaker but I am a recovering professional cabinetmaker, so the woodworking is second-nature to me. Please let me know if you have any recommendations for kits or plans.

You can do a google search on any of these. All have gotten quite positive reviews, but vary widely in $$$. You'll have to decide what fits your space and your budget.

If you want a single full range driver plan you can look at a few sites like
Frugal-phile DIY Audio Community Site
planet_10 hifi
Woden Design
But for multiway, you better go the multiway page, there people can give you better tips.
But a few good sites i know: DIY-Loudspeakers
Meniscus Audio

You have posted this in the single driver forum. Are you looking for that or a multi-driver kit?
My bad, would a moderator kindly move this thread to the proper forum?
You say you want to have the live sound experience but in a small room. What about a decent yet simple 2-way with 10” or 12” PA coaxial design? Plenty of good threads we can point to if it’s interesting proven solutions and what not. Quite simple to build and flexible for future mods too.

I don't know if you've ever heard of Jeff Bagby but I think it's fair to say he was a bit of a hero amongst us diy'ers. Often winning diy speaker building competitions in the U.S.A. He also designed speaker building software that he gave away for free, and he was very generous with advice (what he didn't know wasn't worth knowing).
Anyway, If It were me I'd be looking at Jeffs Maximus-12 from diysoundgroup (can't seem to find it anymore though). It looks like they still have the custom Eminence Magnum-12 woofer for sale and the midrange is just a standard 8" B&C (not that it's any ordinary midrange), so it would be well worth emailing them to see if they still have the crossover/cabinet plans.
The drivers really are top-notch, and should be very dynamic and go loud with ease.

Dustboy...
What is your per-speaker budget for the drivers + crossover parts?
Do you want to avoid DSP tech and stay passive analog?
What amplifier(s) will you use? (watts? current?)
Which Adire Audio kit did you build? MTM?
