So let's say, theoretically, that I have $300 for subwoofer drivers. (OK that happens to be true.)
For this amount I could get 2 Adire Audio Tempests, or 4 of the new Parts Express Quatro 15" subs.
What do you see as the pros and cons of these approaches? Also if you think you have a better $300 option, please share.

4 Dayton Quatros
vs
2 Tempests
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Or, jump on the dipole bandwagon and get 2 DPL12's:

Get the quattros. There is no replacement for displacement, and the efficency of the 15 inch quattro is very nice.
When your 12's would be moving 4 mm, the quattro will be moving 1 mm. With 4 15's you have about as much Sd as 8 twelves.

an excellent point
lesser motion would lead to less distortion. More speed. Any down side to the Quatros?

Well, you haven't said anything about the application. Music or HT? Stereo or single? Enclosure? Or are you only asking a brand quality issue?
Application
about 50% Music, 50% HT. Used in conjuction with my DIY line arrays. The variety of music is very wide.
I am still thinking about the enclosure. With 15" woofers, I understand a low tuned (less than 20hz) vented cabinet is the way to go.
Any thoughts?

I'm a big fan of stereo push-push boxes which requires 4 drivers minimum.
With the Q on the Daytons they look like they might do well in a TL.... the big question is, do you have the room for two refrigerator sized boxes?
On the plus side you could get away with some fairly small amps.

Hi Dave love your sight
It is one of my favorites, and I have used your site repeatedly. Glad you are a Mac fan, so am I. What design software do you use for speakers?
I am fascinated by t-lines but know very little.
So if I were going to go with a pair of T-lines, they would be a pair of Tempests. And they would be huge! I don't know if this would work but let's think about it.
So if i have say 69" for length, and 30" for height, maybe 18" or so deep. I could do something like a single fold tapered line. I think the size at the large end could be about 2.7sd, and the terminus about .25sd to .5sd. The line length woulc be something about 7.5' to 8.5'
Do you think that might work?
