Laugh if you will but I wanted to try something different I currently have a Sharp QA-1750 panel and a 3M 9550 overhead projector..
I'm happy with the results but its to bulky for my room and have no where to conveniantly place it.
So I purchased a smaller projector that is ceiling mountable its only 350 lumens and 150:1 full on/off contrast ratio but it is 800x600 native and can do 1024x768. has video inputs
at such a low lumens should I go with a 2.5 gain glass beaded screen or should I go with 1.0 gain matte white screen. I have already purchased this item on ebay and the seller is awaiting my response to see if I want either 2.5 or 1.0 gain.
I think the glass beads would really help out the low lumens.
but I probably wont be able to see it at all unless I'm right in front. and the matte white probably will be dim..
the projector is a real projector not diy except it uses 36v 400w EVD bulbs... 😕

With a 400w EVD the lumens shouldn't be that bad, I know people who are using this bulb with big images and regular screens and have no brightness problems.
How much did you pay for this thing?
I tried a white matte screen and a silver glass beaded side by side, and the glass beaded yields much nicer colors.
There is no viewing angle with those screens, they yield bright images 180 degrees. Viewing angle only applies to rear projection TV's, because they have fresnel lenses behind the screens that direct most of the light forward.

I would stick with the matte white, I dont think 350 lumens is all that dim. I use an overhead projector and a Sharp projection panel on a matte white screen and it looks plenty bright. I doubt very much that I am getting any more than 350 lumens.

Thats like saying: "my Radeon 9000 is pretty fast, so choose that one over of the 9800"
Of course the 2.5 gain is going to yield a brighter image than a 1.0!
I've personally tested these screens side by side. Silver screens are more expensive. If you have a choice, and its the same price, why would you go with a lower gain screen ???
I agree though 350 lumens isn't really that low, unless you are like me and require a 16' screen

There are problems with high gain screens that I didnt really want to go into. Such as narrow viewing angle, hotspots, and image distortion form the little glass beads not being perfect. Also there is no good way to clean a glass beaded screen if you get any dirty hand prints on it(little kids). I doubt very much that this person is getting a 16' glass beaded screen with his 350 lumen projector. Glass beads also do not help much when you are trying to overcome too much ambient light in the room. I personally dont think the trade off is worth it. Also if he ever decides to buy a brighter projector that glass beaded screen will have to go.
From my understanding, if you want to boost the light gain without sacrificing your image quality, 1.3 or 1.5 gain is the most
you would want to go. I agree that the silver screen is the best solution for a low contrast projector, but I dont think he has that option. Just my two cents, I will shut up and go away now.

One more thing I noticed after I posted, The 2.5 gain glass beaded screen that you see selling for the same price as 1.0 matte screen are not silver high contrast as far as I know. I could be wrong, but i have looked at them myself as well. You have to forgive my choppy train of thought here, I am reading these posts on my breaks at work.
I have to agree with the glass bead naysayers.. I tried a beaded screen and I was really disappointed with the fuzziness of the image. You also have to sit directly in front of them to take advantage of their full brightness. matte white is the way to go IMO. good luck
Thanx.. for the tips..
I'm taking ya's advice and going with the matte white..
because I think this projector is just going to be a starter
and I've also hear that hotspotting can be really bad on a glass beaded screen especially with a high lumens projector.
Oh PSionic, I bought the projector for $347 usd after shipping and
the 96x96 screen for $156 after shipping
Its Supposed to be l a Lightware projector similar to the Dukane 7200a.. look it up at projectorcentral if you want specs.
Ouch.. cant belevie I've spent that much... but I think it will be worth it after I sell my 3M 9550 and my QA-1750 panel on ebay.

The best test of 'Is a Matte white screen bright enough?' is whether the image looks bright enough to you when projected on a white wall at the intended image size. Most white walls will be around gain of 1 give or take a little depending on finish. Your matte white screen should reflect colors more accurately, but the wall will give you a representative idea of what to expect.
If you go 96" wide with a 4:3 projector, you will get ~7 foot candles of light on the whites vs. the 15 or so recommended for movie theaters. You may find this is a bit dim for your taste. Personally I am running a 1200 lumen 4:3 pj @ a similar size 1.1 gain screen and wish that it was a little brighter.
The main criticism I have heard of the glass bead other than cleaning is that the beads tend to sparkle, which some consider annoying for movies.

Im gonna have to disagree with all of you, I got a sample of a beaded screen and taped it up on my normal matte white screen. The beaded (when looked at from the right angle) was sooooo much better looking, The colors were better, the whites were whiter, just all around better. Who cares if there is a viewing angle which THERE IS. But if its looked at from a different angle the least quality you will get is going to be equal to the matte white. I dont know about hotspotting because i had such a small sample but I would say go for the beaded.

tested the projector for a week..
Damn this is so bright.. I can see it in the damn day time.. its great.. BUT... if only the damn brightness would came with a good projector.. I got ripped a new one lol..
Thing has 4 dead pixels. damn person didn't mention that.. it also has an overheating problem.. think i'm gonna have to actually do the diy thing 🙂 and retrofit some extra fans in it.
It works great at first then after awhile a spots seems to get a lil darker but noticable. then after longer while it even darker and another dark spot close to it..
Is it overheating or is a problem with the lcd in it?
Picture quality is great.. with my computer and divx or dvd movies from it. but actual tv (dishnetwork box s-video cable) is too small. I can oversize it in the menu.. to stretch the image to 800x600 but the the picture quality sucks.. like that I think I'm gonna stick to my old qa1750 and 3m 9550 projector.. cant wait till damn screen gets here.
