I change HDD to SSD on all my laptops since 2012, and then they work ok, even slow cheap ones.
And I add memory too, of cause. That's cheaper then SSD, but have less influence on speeed then SSD. Some (many of) old laptops have socketed CPUs so we can change them to faster ones too.
I have two different Asus (at home and at work) and they both are very good.
To the topic: I've made about three orders (in local online-retail shops) before the New Year, got almost anything I ordered, but then, all three times I found that or I have that parts yet, or I don't need them (after experiments). It was above $40 spent.
I wasn't very dissapointed because I like to have big choice of parts in my lab, so I think it was a pre-NewYear sacrifice to the Gods of Electronics. 🙂
