This is so exciting! I hadn't soldered before this morning ever, and I just did the Sonic Impact mod, with flash resisters and Auricaps in the imput, and stepped attenuator volume control! I can't believe it, its playing out of my nakamichi into some technics fb-s1's perfectly, powered by a 18Ah SLA battery.
14 hrs non stop, including 2 hrs trying to desolder that damn capacitor that i replaced with a panasonic FC 470uF one. Strangely, once I did that, replacing all the wires with solid copper ones was easy, and the suction desolder thing worked perfectly!!
After weeks of reading this forum i actuallty feel like i deserve to be here. Still expecting the sonic impact to blow up any minute but its still playing.. i can't believe it. I was sure i'd botched it several times. All I can say is that little board can take a hell of a lot of punishment! Some of the soldering is strictly agricultural. Didnt do the air core inductors, cos i want to spend the money on a Charlize, but did everything else John May did in Hi FI World. If you read this John "thankyou. your article was perfect for me as a total beginner".

Sorry if this is all a bit uninformative to you all, but this site has been brilliant to get me into this. Have been reading a lot of threads here, and getting a bit of the vocabulary. Have even bought two SMPS's off Nuuk, and they're sitting there with me not having a clue how to set them up to plug in, but now i know i will do it pretty easily. Amazing.

That's the wonder of physics/electronics: it works, independently of our understanding or what we think is our understanding of it 😀 (maybe I didn't explain it too well ).

a) Calm down 😀 , get a beer and enjoy the music.
b) Avoid building/modding when tired or sleepy: a mistake is easy made.
c) The best project is the next one. 😉

And be extra careful with anything that smells like an SMPS as there are very deadly high voltages involved, even after turning them off, deadly high voltage may still be there for some time after switching them off. Getting enthusiastic is OK, but keep safety in mind as some mistakes you can make only once.

Yes, well done and heed the advice on the power supply side of things. Always err on the side of safety! 
I think there is always an element of amazement when something works, particularly first time. And I know that I pick up every little noise for the first few hours that I listen to a new project. I was listening to a new pre-amp today and thought that I heard little clicks that shouldn't be on the music. It was the door moving with the draft because it wasn't properly shut but my mind was half expecting trouble with the pre-amp!

Thanks for the advice all. Will follow it, especially re SMPS's!!! Thanks again, John. The amp ws run in for about 20 hrs before modding it, and has had another 6 or so, and sounds surprisingly good already, despite needing a lot more. Have been looking inside it, especially at the auricaps, and feel a real sense of satisfaction, in the knowledge too that i "know" it.
Might plug it into my Quads tonight, just to see how its doing against my "made by a friend" set monoblocks.. Hee hee
Suddenly feel ok about repairing a desoldered connection in my Fi Phy phono stage and perhaps even building a headphone amp... I may have got the bug...
