I have a sony 4 channel amp that can be bridged into a 2 channel one that has a pair of 4182 ii chips in it.
But 1 of the 4 doesn't make sound.
can the chip fail that way or am I looking for a different failed component ?
Thanks.
Srinath.

You have to remove these component and check that on prototipe OEM board, that you can built reading datasheet of this STK, if it's was ok and sound normal on both channels, you can search for another failed component
Actually they are not reliable. They don't have internal protection against short circuit, cannot drive low impedance load. Cheap STK-based amps don't have external relay at the output so they will fail very easily.
They are indeed good sounding (less fatigue than mos amp chips, even the Gainclone).
Original datasheet's of these hybrid circuit provided by Sanyo Electric Co. show's a fully short circuit protection and a thermal shutdown protection circuit for these amp's, perhaps they don't show these circuits actually they was connected all together and work very well.
So they was say only one think, THEY ARE RELIABLE.
