15" XGA TFT w/ malfunctioning backlight

First of all, I hope this question belongs here. If not I apologize.

I have recently been given a Philips 15" XGA TFT. It's rather new, and has a TCO '99 rating. The error is most strange. When I turn it on, it shows a nice picture with good backlighting. After half a second it turns black. The display itself is working, it displays the picture, only there's no backlight. I've taken it apart to pieces, inspected it visually, and even tried another power supply from the same type of screen. Nothing works.

Best would be if I could make it work as it is. Any ideas on what's wrong? And how to fix it?

Second best, is it possible to make a DIY projector of some kind with it? I know nothing about this world, I normally stay in the audio part of diyAudio.com 😉

Any help is most welcome.

Hmmm. The fact that it is on at the start but goes out makes me wonder if it's a problem with not enough power. Then again, LCD monitors aren't exactly something I know a lot about, I'm just speaking out of experience with other malfunctioning electronics. If you can take it apart and seperate the backlight, then you can probably make it into a video projector. You might need to extend the ribbon cables or something, but it can probably work.

Most likely its the backlight inverter. Its a small board that one or both of the backights will be plugged into after the main power supply. Alot of times you can find replacements on ebay.
I was given a Princeton LCD 15 that had a bad inverter, turns out its perfect for diy projection though. The diver board on the rear easily swung out of the way.

The lamps in some lcd monitors are the same as the white cold cathodes sold at pc modding stores. I'm not familiar with your monitor, but both my KDS Rad5 and Benq FP567s used the same light and inverter as the ones for case modding.
