15.4" Proview vs 17" LCD...

chosing an LCD

Most of the issues with long throw triplets concern the limited Field Of View. Builders have posted images from 17" LCDs with pretty dim corners, while others have written about modifying the spacing of large triplets to handle the corners of a 17" LCD better.

So I think the 15.4" LCD would be a much better choice, if you want to use that projection lens.

Oh... I thought that the new 500mm fresnel from 3dlens solved that issue...

I thought I heard somewhere that one of the DIY Projector sites (DIYBuilders Group?) was designing a long throw lens that solved all the problems with larger LCDs...

I wonder when thats supposed to be released?

Lumenlab has recently started taking pre-orders for their "Pro Lens" set which includes a custom designed triplet that they say will work well with larger panels like the 17" widescreen. Unfortunately, it seems a recent problem has caused a delay in the first batch for at least another 8 weeks.

At $200 for the triplet alone, it's a bit pricey but seems to be a well designed piece. We'll have to see how it works out!

I'm gonna keep lurking fleabay for cheaper options in the meantime.

The only 15.4" Proview (or any brand, for that matter) I could find was the PL576Ws available at Staples for about $200:

It's not in stock on the web page and ProView doesn't list it on their site. It also has no digital input - VGA D-Sub is the only PC input. Personally, I'd rather avoid letting the monitor do it's crap A/D conversion.

For 17", I found the Westinghouse LCM-17w7. It has DVI-D, WXGA and a respectable 15 ms response time for around $200. This looks like a great option except the larger size means a harder time finding a good projection lens for it.

There were also some more expensive 17" TV/Monitors that I saw for around $500-$600 from the likes of Sony, LG, Magnavox and others but they didn't seem to add any features except maybe onboard sound, TV connections and HDCP (if you can even call that a feature.)

I think Ill be better off waiting till the LL Lens comes out. If they are true to their word, and it works well with a 17" I think Id rather build around an easier to find 17" panel than a one source only 15.4"

I still have an unused lilliput that I could used the 135mm DIYPC lens with I guess

BTW, which 15" and 17" widescreen panels were you looking at? Anyone have experience stripping them or actually using them in a projector?

I think there are a few threads around here of people who have built around 17" panels...

With regards to the Westinghouse 17W7, I picked one up from Best Buy last night on sale for $199. It stripped in a snap. I will be dropping it into a box with 220/550 front/rear fresnel, 400W MH and the 135mm diypc triplet. I'll post in a separate thread when I've made some progress.

Cheers,
brian

Do you already have your DIYPC Triplet?

I have one Im hoping to get rid of... Its never been used. I was going to build a lilliput projector and use that lens on it... but I decided to do something different.
