hello folks
i am considering to build a boombox based on a car sterero so i can have fm radio, mp3, bluetooth xover and amp in a very convenient package
This is intended to be used with good speakers on moderated listening levels and be portable. I dont really expect to drain all 10A required for car stereo at max power.
So i am considering if it does the worth to get an used 13.8v cb supply (5-7A) instead of cheap generic 10A SMPS. The last is still appealing being cheaper, smaller, lighter
thank you in advance

From a dedicated linear PSU person: in this specific case a good quality SMPS (that is something different than cheap) will be best as it is indeed smaller, lighter and easy to find with ample reserves in current. Since it is a boombox I take it should be portable and sound quality should be OK but not high end? Then SMPS is a no brainer I guess. With portable stuff every kilo reminds you every time you take it with you that you could have made it lighter 🙂

Get a quality SMPS by a reputable manufacturer. Liteon, Delta, Meanwell etc. Some of these things are intended to power LED strips, where all they have to do is supply current.
LED strip doesnt care about ripple/noise, dynamic load response / stability, etc.

Actually i might do !
I mean im not in high end territory but i wish to get some good quality.
I found Meanwell industrial din mounting psu, would it be ok ?

I had started to make a similar setup based on an older pa amp using a Bluetooth DAC integrated into it. It worked for a while until the dac pumped a blast of something the amp input did not like, and killed the project.
What I did find that has worked very well, is a small, dual tpa3116, class D, Bluetooth board that runs from a used laptop power supply from a thrift store. Sounds about the same as the 100w old clunker, and the amp is about the size of a deck of playing cards.
