Tung Sol's are made in Russia, last I checked.
I thought I have to look into that. Is 12ax7 or ecc803 you talked about.
Of course if one can afford Telefunken's, that would be the way to go. If you can find Dynaco FM-3's with original tubes. They are worth the purchase just for the tubes.
I have some brand new Telefunken with me, but friends brought them out from me over the years. I don't have nothing for myself now and don't want to spend a fortune to buy them back. Tung-sol re-issue might be the one to go.
Ian,
What brand are they?
The 12AX7WA and 12AX7LPS I use are both made by Sovtek.
Cheers
Ian
Russian tubes are crap. Both their production machines and base materials are inferior to those used in the haydays of tube production. Which of their original designs better western types, besides pricewise?

'Crap'. Is that a technical term of some sort?

Ian,
Thanks, I did check with some brands and I thought they are made in Russia, Tungsol reissue n Gold Lion. Some members at the other forums did recommend them if have to buy new with rather tight budget.

Disco,
Thanks for your feedback.
I have been using some tubes made in Russia, 6e5p, 6n1p n ecc99. they sound good to me.
Especially the 6c33c has been my favourite for many year. I have been making lots of amps with 300b, 2a3, kt66 n 88 in SE n Pp. Only this 6c33c otl stays for many years on my system.
I thought every tube has his merit, depends How you match them with your system. And what kind of power you need.
Regards
Albert

Yes, Sovtek tubes are made in Russia. They are owned by New Sensor Corporation. They also make Electro Harmonix brand tubes:

Hi,
I don't quite agree with the crap part but admit to having had the same bias towards all valves made behind the Iron Curtain back when Western European valve were still plentiful.
Later on I discovered that there were some incredibly good sounding ones from brands like Tesla, Sovtek and Svetlana, Ei.
I don't feel Russian valves are crap. I suppose much depends on the distributor nowadays.
@Albertii:
Since this is a phono stage I'd stick to ECC83/12AX7A as putting in a different type may well affect the RIAA curve.
If the circuit is P2P wired and you don't mind rewiring the sockets then a set of NOS E283CC is about the best sounding replacement you may find IMHO.
Either that or a set of E83CC by Tesla. Both are late tech frame grid valves and last for several ten thousands of hours. E283CC even has a shield between sections IIRC but needs a 6.3V heater supply.
Ciao, 😉

Frank,
Thanks for the info. P2P is the only way I make all my amps.
E83CC by Tesla. What is best brand for E283CC ?
Thanks
Albert
Hi,
E283CC was a Philips design. You'll only find them made by any subsidiary of Philips.
The Tesla E83CC is very similar both soundwise and technically and has the added advantage of having the same pinout as the common ECC83/12AX7A.
Both are technically well above a TFK ECC83 IME.

Many of the later PAS-3x preamp kits came with four of them, even in the original boxes.
