Hi,
As everybody knows the price of Telefunken 12au7/12ax7 are crazily high. I thought it's almost the time for me to replace both tube for my phono amp. They are cracking at the moment. I would like to have your inspiration/ impression of the 12ax7/12au7 you guys been using other than Telefunken. Would there be any chance there are something out there not as expensive and sound good ? Feel free to make suggestion.
Thanks
Albert

6h2N from Svetlana is electrically similar with excellent results as used as a pre amp. All you have to do is convert the heater wiring.
Current production 12AX7WA types I have found to be the lowest noise and microphonics of all available 12AX7 tubes.
Current production 12AX7LPS types I have found to have the lowest distortion but you need to select for low microphonics and noise.
Cheers

I have been really impressed with Raytheon black plate 12AX7's, I don't know what they go for but I don't think they are a fad tube and the ones I have all test similarly well.

Thanks. I did think about this tube. Does it noisy, microphonic?

Ian,
What brand are they?

I did try some Raytheon, but those I have are dark sounding, might be only me.
If you like bright sounding tubes I found that the General Electric tubes I have tried are really bright. They have long gray plates and were made for CBS, they also have red paint on the very tip, maybe this was a screening measure to ensure quiet operation?
It's tough to judge what tubes will do in other circuits but I am going on what they sound like in my phono pre.
Overall balance in tonality were Amperex and Mullard's but they aren't much cheaper than Telefunkens.

In my two stage passive RIAA phono preamp I sometimes use eithervintage GE 6072/12AY7 and/or Tele 12AX7. If you can find 6072 NOS they are beautiful tubes and more than capable of Tele-like sound.

I had some Millard years back n liked their sound too, but haven't had any experience with Amperex. Yeah...they are really expensive now.
Best replacement for the Telefunken or Mullard 12ax7 for pennies on the dollar
These are the best sounding tubes. I was able to find some for 15.00 each.
In my opinion These sound better then the Mullard ecc83. The 5755 tube is 10,000 hours with no noise. I could not here any noise what so ever. Yet could here the birds and other sounds I could not here with the 12ax7 Mullards I was using.
I will suggest the Ratheon RELIABILITY CONTROLLED ck 5755 or 5755 as a direct replacement for the Mullard 12ax7 ecc83. All you would have to do is rewire the tube socket or simply buy the 12ax7 to 5755 tube socket adapter.
See the 5755 / 420a tube was designed for telephone communications. These tubes are super durable and were designed to produce an excellent sound to boost communication from all over the world. I have been investigating tubes for many decades. Please let me know if anyone has a tube question. It is my passion.

Am using the re-issue Tung Sol ECC803S and happy enough with them. Bought those after considering the PSvane tubes.
IMHO at the end of the day the circuit is just as, if not more, important than the tubes used. I spend the extra money on a good quality output and mains transformers. (Most OPT are far too small and do not have the required frequency range, especially at the low end).

Agree with AmadeusMozart, I am very impressed with the current production Tung-Sol 12AX7's a very quiet tube, and nice sound.

The Chinese ones I bought are a bit microphonic.
If you tap on the side of them you can hear it in the audio.
I get mine from RS components, they are about 2 for £10.
They are Chinese but seem to work ok.
6n2 ??

Tung Sol's are made in Russia, last I checked.
