10" buyout titan subwoofer from partsexpress

So, just to start out, I'm going to come out and stay that I'm not very experienced with subwoofer design, other than going off of complete designs and plans.

So, while making my last parts order from PE, I found these, saw decent enough reviews, so on a larf I grabbed a pair. I figured worse case scenario I hook them up in the garage or for my kids video game setup, but I would like to try my hand at building them into a decent design.

Titan 10" Coated Paper Cone Red Surround Woofer 4 Ohm

Would the suggested box size be a workable starting point for each speaker? Would it be a useful idea to build them into a shared box as a push-push design?

Yes, I know these are cheap, please don't comment if all you have to say are negative comments based on price/quality. I just want to build them up into something useful for LF extension and take what I can get efficiency and quality wise.

Unfortunately there are very few options for this one.

It's not a subwoofer, just a woofer intended for cars. The Qts is very high so its really only suitable for a sealed box, with lots of fill. I've put a quick hornresp sim for a closed box from 80L->30L. You might be able to EQ it flatter if you have existing equipment (DSP, etc). It also looks like you prefer tube amps so driving this 4ohm speaker may be a problem.

If that's unsuitable you could always sell them.

That doesn't look too bad, and could work with a bit of EQ. Might even do ok as-is. I'm assuming the flatter line is the 80L enclosure?

If I wanted to do push-push with them in a common box, would I double the size, or stick to the same dimensions?

I don't have DSP capabilities, but I'm strongly considering getting a miniDSP rig together at some point. I'm an analog guy primarily, mainly because I don't have more than a couple crappy laptops as far as computers, and lack the time as well as space to set up more. Then you get into DACs, etc. Quite the rabbit hole for those of us that DIY everything that we can 🙂

And 4 ohms isn't necessarily a problem, as I can build up something that will work for that easily, I just don't have anything that is currently set up for it. I've got piles and piles of LM3886 and LM4780, might be time to dust them off and build a big pair of parallel/bridge chipamps.

I'd go for as many as you like in an open baffle setup. Two minimum, maybe four.

Chris

Reminds me of KLH model 20 woofer. Worked then, will work now, in multiples. Ten bucks!

Cheap enough that a line array for LF sounds like an absurd but fun idea 😉

+1 for OB due to very high qts.

Hmmmm. With what, a 24" round baffle perhaps?

Here's a few data points for the IB suggestion. You will have to have some type of HP filter otherwise xmax will be exceeded at low power levels (5W).

Isobaric, 2 drivers in series so the impedance is a little easier to driver. Its a sealed 60L box. Still should have a HP, but xmax is hit at 16W, still needs EQ but you get 100dB.

Hi All,

FYI:

b🙂

Wow, thank you. Of these three, what makes more sense? I'm having a hard time looking at things practically as I'm not terribly familiar with hornresp... Is this with both driver mounted next to eachother, or a single?

267L 😱

Neat. Time to build it as a platform to set under my couch!

It was interesting and I was impressed that @bjorno got a TH to work with this driver. However at 267L its about the size of a car and a 4.5m path is a lot of folds. 🙂

Could go for a quarter 4'x8' sheet of ply per top/bottom (24x48") folding baffles as necessary internally, fire the drivers from either end, and set it as a coffee table, or an ottoman 😎

Unless you're firing it from a basement/crawlspace, I think you're going to find bjorn's suggestion a bit difficult to package. 🙂

The drivers in this case aren't worth the investment in lumber! Stick with simple simple designs as you don't have the driver for loaded alignments (267 l) nor the output/low distortion to justify spending a tom of time on a box
