1/4” speaker output

I am totally a novice but I like to tinker. I have an electric organ but there is no headphone jack. I would like to put one in the speaker out line, splice right into the wire where it plugs into the speaker. I tried this on an old guitar hi-fi amp once and it caught on fire. I think had the polarity reversed. Hope to hear from you. THANKS.
