Hi. I'm new here. I was wondering if anyone can help me with a SP-14 6BY5 rectifier mod? Thanks. Ian
What's an SP-14?I was wondering if anyone can help me with a SP-14 6BY5 rectifier mod?

So it looks like the spec'd rectifier is a 6X5. Why not just use one of those? They're not rare or expensive. The SP-14 is a 6sn7 tube-based preamp offered by tubes 4 hifi.
Plus I don't see a schematic on their page, so the circuit & PS are a complete unknown.

It's a mod made by Don Sacs. The mfr doesn't comment on this mod. And Don won't comment either. This mod has been talked about on this forum before. Just waiting for someone who has done this mod before.
Well, a quick look at the rectifier data sheets shows a slightly incompatible pinout, and the fact that the 6BY5GA draws 1.6 amps of heater current vs 0.6 amps for a 6X5 may explain why nobody's talking about it. Maybe the stock power trans can't handle the extra current? It's a mod made by Don Sacs. The mfr doesn't comment on this mod. And Don won't comment either. Thats the thing. The power transformer puts out 2 amps. Changing from a 6x5- 6by5 drives the pre amp tubes a little more resulting in a more robust sound stage.
I am going to try the same Mod with my sp14 with the 6BY5 rectifier and have got a bigger toroidal Xformer rated at 2.5 amps to use. There was another person asking the same question on this format so will try to find the link for you
Run 6X5GT or 6BY5GA Rectifier
Try this link above on the search forum on DIY Audio as It well spells out the procedure, I have not done it yet myself as I am busy doing my house then speakers then this preamp. The transformer I have is rated at 2 x 2.5amp so may even try two 6By5 or one for each channel. All the best.

Thanks. I have a general idea of the mod. I saw that post as well. I just can't figure out if the two R-FILLS are bridged. The OEM build shows one bridge/one resistor. I'm trying to nail down the exact way to do it. Thanks again. Ian.
I would short both R_FILLs. I never understood why they are there in the first place. The Anteks put out a fairly steady 6.3 volts regardless of load. Bridge 3 & 4 and 7 & 8 and don't worry about it. ;-)
And why are you even considering this ? Is there anything in your sp-14 that dont satisfy your ears ?It's a mod made by Don Sacs. The mfr doesn't comment on this mod. And Don won't comment either.
