After completing and enjoying the Frugel Horn mk3 speakers I'm looking for a new project as my son has claimed them for his new apartment. I must thank everybody involved with design of this great floor standers. First listen was away from the rear wall and sounded far too sharp in the mid range but after some moving around wow, very nice. Bass very good but not over powering even close to wall, top end detailed but not sharp. My son felt the same and now they are gone 🙄.
Looking at the Frugel Horn XL as I believe these will have a smother and richer mid range but without bass overload hopefully. The Sibelis clone looks interesting but without driver cabinet match. Any recommendations on the next build and possible performance compared against the FH mk3.

FHXL with A10p has a very nice balance, with a softer top end vs the A10.3. Excellent bass extension, as you would expect. Another really nice driver option for this enclosure would be the MA 11MS.

Yes. I guess you'll have to do your own Enabl'g now.
Stock 11MS is good thou. I've only heard the stock driver.
CHN-110 works too, but doesn't go as deep as 10p & A10.3.

I thought those were made with Lowther usually? Yours look pretty! They would be perfect for computer speaker being wall mounted and all...🤔

I can't be positive, but the originals, from Mr. Daniel Ciesinger, I believe used Fostex drivers. But, I bet Lowthers would benefit from it.

CHN-110 is a really well balanced driver. IAnd an absolute bargin. t does go lower than A10s, but needs (and can use) a bigger box.

Looks like the FHXL can run with a few drivers, don't really want a bass monster.
Comparing FHXL and the Sibelis they have similar internal volume (FH larger) but I expect the FH to have more bass output. Could the FHXL be converted to straight cabinet with driver and port both facing forward, I know this would change its performance but would the drivers still work keeping the inside measurements the same. Would like the smother presentation of the larger drivers over the FH mk3 but without the extra bass extension. As you can see my main speakers are PMC which have excellent extension in the bass so want something to complement them rather than replace. Thanks

I have Mk3 with Pluvia and Fhxl with 11ms. Different rooms and amp, but I dont think that Fhxl have much more bass, a bit more but not too much
That's interesting, going to make a donation to get the plans. Well worth it for the amount of work put into the design of these speakers.

- How would a MAOP 5 perform in the Cornu? (I suspect it would be awesome!)
- Considering the distance from where I’m sitting, what would be the best distance between the speakers center-to-center
- What is the optimal size for the Cornu in this setup?

I would think that XRK is the one to ask over in the Cornu thread itself, as he seems to have modelled them many times.

There is a version with a straight front, but the mouth is on the back sothat it can take advantage of the wall/floor or corner behind it to vitually increase/multiply the horn mouth. Put the mouth on the front you lose bass.

Originally developed with A10.3/p in mind, then FF165wk, but it can support a wide range of (typically) 5.25-6.5” driver. Tuning by tweaking the damping and the horn position relative to what is behind.

Thanks Dave, I expect to lose bass with a front port but was curious if the dimensions worked still. Following on from the success of the mk3 I'll proberly go for a standard XL build. For the driver I'm leaning towards the A10.3 as I believe from what I've read that this trades some bass for better mids and highs.
