John Darko sheds a little light on the weird mainstream media in his new video.
Yes, those new UHQRs and Chad Kassem and Speaker's Corner and MoFi 200g are probably part of reason why vinyl sales ($$) are so high.

Afaik cd is still the only way to get music in possesion in a lossless digital format. I use Spotify a lot but when I really like something buy the CD for that very reason. Vinyl is nice but too much of a hassle for me.
I really need the disc only once to rip it to the NAS...

My music preferences are mostly classical. And CD box sets are very common in the classical genre. Also, the Japan CD market is still very active.
My highest-fidelity audio playback device is (currently) neither phono nor SACD/DVD-A (but these sources have been as various projects come and go from my diy lab) . Rather, it's a a few heavily modded late-1980s Philips CD players. That's my reference.
And, yes, most EAC ripped to SSDs for computer and portable playback.

How about flac file downloads?
Good point, that is also a possibility for some albums. But prices are in my experience not much lower than buying the CD. And I had bad experiences. Once bought a flac that on fft showed it was just a limited bandwidth mp3 converted to flac.
So for almost the same money I prefer to have the physical shiny thing. Maybe I'm getting old 😉

But those don't count the sale of USED CDs on discogs or ebay f.ex, right? I can't remember the last time I bought a brand new one...
I just bought the SACD remaster of The Best of Fourplay, and I might add the Yowamushi Pedal soundtrack from Japan on CD.
I don’t like renting my music, so streaming isn’t of interest to me. I used to do this, then the service I was using changed hands and wanted me to pay extra just to access my own uploads. I was done right there and from that point onward it was hard copies only.
Vinyl is more of a hobby for me; I like the procedure involved.

I buy both new and second hand SACDs. My local public library has got a very good selection of SACD as well…. 🙄
The only reason for me to buy SACD is multichannel. The SACD and DSD format itself is just plain stupid.
Years ago I bought a DVD player that could handle CD, DVD video, DVD audio and SACD. I think I managed to buy two SACDs and two DVD audios before the formats seemed to disappear. Good to know that SACDs are still available somewhere.
In Norway where I live, the leading record store called Platekompaniet currently has 1351 SACDs in their catalogue. Not bad. On Amazon I can find a lot more…. So the format is not completely dead. Yet.
I think it has been about 15 years since I used a CD player. Had kids and the CDs had to get ripped and go into hiding. Also that downloading music thing happened.
Currently having a hard time imagining loading a disk when I want to listen to something.

Hi, in Canada they can be bought in music-specific outlets (new), second hand shops (used), and online.I didn't know you could still buy SACDs somewhere. Are they new or second hand?
I’m in the market for a new UHD player, so I’ll be researching one with SACD. Two birds with one stone.
This is also about 50% of my music acquisitions: mostly used discs (CD, DVD-A, SACD) off Amazon marketplace and Discogs, but some new/old stock. Most of the extant SACD catalogue (multi-channel) is classical, but there are a few jazz and pop/rock/folk titles available--usually at higher price due to demand.I still buy music on physical media, but mostly classical music on SACD in multichannel. Rarely play the actual disc, as I do a ISO extract of the DSD mulitichannel layer, and play it with KODI on a PC.
How does KODI handle the problem of PC hardware not supporting "DSD over HDMI" (DOH)? Otherwise, you get an automatic conversion to PCM inside the PC before the digital stream goes out to DAC or AVP.
I rip the multichannel DSD files to an external USB hard drive, then use an OPPO BDP-103 via USB to play the ripped DSD tracks, since it supports DOH. The reason why I do this is because the conversion to PCM in the PC is quite audible; all the magic seems to disappear when the OS converts to PCM. The AVP used for multichannel seems to preserve the phase information of the DSD bitstream. It's not difficult the hear the difference.
