Suggestions On Reasonably Priced 10" or 12" Woofer

I'm looking for a good sounding, reasonably priced 10" or 12" woofer to be used in a 2 way with Michael Chua's recommended Pyle PDS442/Dayton H07E compression driver combo on top. I will be using 6BQ5 tube amplification.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Im a big fan of the b&c 10cl51, it's about twice the price of the 10fe200, but smoother at the expense of low end. It's really more of a midrange driver, but I use it in a quasi mltl with an os12 waveguide and d220ti. Sounds great with eq and with a boost to the bottom end, I really don't need a subwoofer for anything but the really low stuff. I listen in my office mostly and not usually very loud.

Many people have passed on great drivers because they are concerned with what people might think of logos on duskcaps….a pair of jbl gt1000 replaced the original 10s in my Boston a150s, the jbl with 90 or 91 db sensitivity matched well with the a150 and sound better then the oem drivers with less distortion, more output and dig deeper. My tube amp is happy driving them and does not feel awkward about the logos

a150 is a 3-way.

"Sub" (car or home) is almost always a higher Mms driver with a lower upper freq. "bell-mode" break-up - it's rarely a good idea to use them for 2-way loudspeakers UNLESS it's pairing with a broad-band fullrange for the tweeter (which is not the case with this poster). Even then though, you typically need a more "aggressive"/steep low-pass crossover.

Additionally the higher Mms is likely to be less efficient, and on top of that most car audio sub's are 4 ohms (so even lower efficiency). Here it's preferable to have much higher efficiency not only for the amp, but also for baffle-step compensation.

I don't have anything against using car subs in home systems, but it's just not something I'd look for in this use-case. (..there could be a few rare exceptions out there). As for logo's - I guess just paint over them or sand them off. Though not at all relevant to this thread, the Eton MAS 80 looks exactly like the type of driver I'd be willing to break-out the sand-paper for!

Dayton PA310-8 is nice and cheap. It has a good balance of characteristics for a two-way: reasonably high efficiency, low Fs, flat midrange extension without a crazy breakup peak.
I think it has a bit more low-end heft than the Faital 10FE200 which probably has a cleaner midrange.

Also, where is this woofer supposed to be crossed over? That little waveguide stops loading at 2200Hz and will lose its directivity control even higher. You would be crossing a 12" at 1500hz max.
I don't see these drivers handing off to each other gracefully, especially with lower-order passive XO. A bigger horn like the Eminence H290 might be a better fit.
Then you are looking at "Econowave" designs which are well documented for many driver combinations.

The first large format two-way I built used the Dayton PA310-8 and a B&C DE250 on a large QSC horn (no longer available unfortunately) and I absolutely loved it.

I said it once........
I'll say it again !!!
Take e look at GRS's SW12 and SW10 drivers, don't let the price fool you they are way better than what they cost, and if you are on a budget it is a no brainer.
I bought mine when they where only $23 a piece, and 4 of the six I bought can really pump some air !!
I have these drivers, and gonna get multiples of them for a whole lot less than just one of some of the other drivers available for my line array project, I have FR and THD sweeps of the 12SW-4's I do have running in my setup if you wish to see them, the SW10's I have yet to order.

FWIW 😉

jer 🙂
