Hi everyone, i have a bunch of RC4558 from texas instruments. My question is where i can use these without degrading the signal?
Wherever you need a dual opamp. They are designed specifically for audio, have good specs, and sound quite nice. They are the provided opamp in the Whammy kit, feel free to use them wherever you like.
Probably you're right! Didn't think much when i asked the question because according to a large number of people it is the 'worst opamp ever'!!
Although i've much better opamps in my possession but the noise figure of 4558 is quite good. Do you recommend it for gain stage? I do not need more than 1-2 Vrms approx. Also i think i can use it for unity gain buffer, will it work well there? 🙂

Huh… serves me right for not reading very well, I read this as the RC4580… which is a different opamp.
Still, in many cases an opamp is an opamp and will work perfectly. Give your 4558 a try and see what happens, I suspect you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Anyway....my question remains unanswered 😒Probably you're right! Didn't think much when i asked the question because according to a large number of people it is the 'worst opamp ever'!!

I just finished a simple mixer design using the TLE2072 in SO-8 . Think of it as a TL072 on steroids...
'4558 is killer in slow small signals like guitar pedals. One of the smoothest sounds around.
Also very effective in the TEAC mixers where the whole thing ran -10dBv except the '5532 at the main outputs.

Says people who never ever designed anything but read lots of Forums, and copypaste one another.according to a large number of people it is the 'worst opamp ever'!!
File them with those emphatically state "Mercedes Benz is cr*p, Volvo is best" (substitute brands as ylu wish) ... and drive a rusty shot rings oil burning 70s clunker 😉
Correct that to: "I see them*everywhere*, as in everywhere, including cheap generic stuff.I usually see the 4558 in some incarnation in bargain-basement lowest-bidder electronics
You´ll also see lead-tin solder, plastic covered wire and fiberglass base PCBs all over the place, including cheap stuff ...... does the phrase "Industry standard" ring a bell?
Were better Op Amps made later?
You bet.
Does ir mean they are cr*p?
No way.
Not even comparable to 741, BUT you had to mention it in the datasheet simply because until then 741 was THE standard.much better than dual 741(improved).
Mentioning compatibility was a BIG sales point.
That´s a blanket statement if I ever saw one 😉For filters i think tl0 series fet opamps are good.
It was answered in post #4 (i.e.: it was improperly formulated)Anyway....my question remains unanswered
Stuff performs well if dsigned within its limits-Also very effective in ......
RC4558 is a workhorse and performs VERY well if asked for, say:
* Gv 1X to 50X
* voltage out up to 5 or 6 V RMS
* load 2k or higher
* <1M input impedance
* general purpose quite good noise performance
which covers LOTS of practical applications.
and i like latin american culture and heritage. I would love to visit there oneday.
