Hi all,
I have the Adelphos MTM kit and am in the process of building the cabinet.
These are fairly large stand-mount speakers at around 22" cabinet height.
The tweeter is center height, so I think something like 17" stands would be needed.
I'm slightly concerned about the stability and aesthetics of placing these on stands.
I'd appreciate input on whether any of these are preferred options:
1) Build a full size cabinet (approx. 40" height). The top 22" would be enclosed (as originally designed) with the bottom 18" open.
2) Build the bottom half as a bass module. Jeff Bagby published one of these but it assumes the non-MTM version and is 25" height, so I need a different option.
Thanks

+1 on tweeter height and if the MTM goes down to a < ~120 Hz XO, then highly recommend separate subs ala Dr. Geddes.
Understood on the tweeter height.
Listening position varies and so I assume there is some common height to place the tweeter? I've noticed it is usually around 29-30" from the floor.
My question was whether it should be fine to build the cabinet as a floorstander, assuming it is sealed in the upper portion based on the original cabinet volume? I feel like it should be fine but wanted to confirm.
In this scenario I would also place the XO in the bottom section for convenience

OK, whatever height used most.
Don't see why not as me and many others way back when used the dead space to mass load it with vinyl albums, magazines, decorative flower arrangements, etc.. One guy stacked his bar weights there, others a pet bed. Main thing is make sure it makes no 'hollow' or resonant sounds and add something heavy that can be easily removed.

29-30" is pretty low for tweeter height. Typically when sitting down ear height is about 37-38" above the floor and that's about where the tweeter should be. Particulary for a vertical MTM.Understood on the tweeter height.

I don't think it really matters much whether the stand is an integrated part of the the speaker cabinet or a completley separate piece. Keeping it separate gives you some flexibility for future changes. Making it integrated limits what you can do if you want to change things later. If, for example, you want to change the speaker height.
Thanks for the input.
I just measured myself and you are right about ear height being around 38".
For the tweeter to be in-line that means 27" stands and total height of 50" which seems really tall, atleast 10" more than any other design I've seen.

And that's one of the problems with an MTM. The Adelphos MTM kit was originally intended to be used horizontally as a Center Channel, which is why it is priced at Meniscus on a single quantity basis rather than as a pair. Of course, you can still use it vertically and put it at a lower height. A lot depends on how far away you are sitting. If you are far enough away none of this may matter much. Thanks for the input.

That makes sense.
I have the Troels Gravesen Faital 3WC and close to finishing the Ekta mk2. I am hoping that I will keep either of those in my main system for a while.
I bought the Adelphos MTM stereo kit from someone here for less than half the retail cost.
Given the price, I thought it would be interesting to hear how a fairly different speaker compares, so trying to make the best of this situation.
My listening position is about 8-9 ft away from the each speaker, if it makes a difference.
I don't have much use for a center channel, I suppose I could build them and sell as center singles.

I found the Kairos woofer module at this might be a viable option instead of a basic stand: https://meniscusaudio.com/product/kairos-woofer-module-kit/
A few unknowns --
1) Seems like it is intended for 8ohm nominal speakers, which the Adelphos is. But, is it ok with the MTM version? Seems like that should have 4ohm nom. impedance due to parallel woofers.
2) The cabinet drawing is dimensioned for the port. The 8.5"W x 25"H seem like they would be a good match. If using the passive radiator, how would the box need to be resized?

Right. I used to have MTMs with 5" drivers. Proportions are kind of weird looking being basically tall and narrow. Thanks for the input.

Interesting, this uses the same drivers.
Wondering if I should just build the SBA-16 instead?
I would take a loss on the crossover parts but seems like the drivers are significantly more costly in this case
Any thoughts on how these designs compare?
I have ekta mkii currently and have been considering adelphos mtm. I would love to hear how they compare.
Thanks 32y0 I had not noticed.
oglethorpescolony interesting! What made you consider the Adelphos given you already have the Ekta?

I made a pair of Jeff's Auricles about a year ago, which are two ways. I seriously considered doing exactly what you are asking about, but in the end just built the standmount version. There's absolutely nothing to stop you from making a floorstanding cabinet, as long as you place the interior partition to maintain the spec'd cabinet volume, as has been suggested. I would build them this way without a doubt. I like the way it looks when an additional layer of baffle is added to the MTM portion of the cab, the added mass also has sonic benefits.
I built a pair of Jeff Bagby tributes as a gift and felt they compared better than they should to the ekta, given the price difference. I really want to own a pair of bagby and since my listening room is pretty good sized the extra woofer will be useful.
You might want to look at the Testarossa, it’s the big brother of the Auricle.I built a pair of Jeff Bagby tributes as a gift and felt they compared better than they should to the ekta, given the price difference.
